About The Position

The Sterile Processing Manager collaborates with the Director of Surgery Services and all surgery services leadership, has daily responsibility for the effective implementation of the philosophy, goals, policies, and procedures of the hospital and the sterile processing/surgery department and their effect on patient care outcomes. This position has authority to make decisions on the units and the responsibility and accountability for the staff and the regulatory and safe practices in the sterile processing and related infection control arena.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree or higher
  • Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Tech (CSPDT) from the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution
  • Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Management (CSPDM) from the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution
  • Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution
  • Certified Registered Central Service Technician from the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association
  • Certified Healthcare Leader from the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association
  • Five (5) or more years of sterile processing experience
  • One (1) or more years of leadership experience

Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership and oversight for the day-to-day operations of the hospital's Sterile Processing functions, including decontamination, assembly, sterilization, reprocessing, distribution, and pickup.
  • Manages all hiring, training, and coordination of all Sterile Processing staff, including scheduling, time approval, and corrective action as needed.
  • Ensures departmental compliance with regulatory requirements for in-house sterilization of instruments and equipment.
  • Collaborates with the Operating Room (OR) Manager and OR Charge nurse to schedule the cross training of all designated staff between the OR and Sterile Processing.
  • Leads department staff in adapting to changes in surgery workload.
  • Processes hospital sterilized goods, instruments, and equipment for all departments that use them. Identifies the instrumentation needs, losses, and repairs for every hospital unit.
  • Oversees Sterile Processing staff annual competencies.
  • Reviews the surgery schedule and analyzes the impact on the Sterile Processing department. Plans according to schedule, communicating with all sterile processing staff on all shifts. Approves staffing schedules and ensures all procedures and shifts are adequately staffed.
  • Supervises onboarding and precepting new employees as needed insuring they are competent in the processing cycle.
  • Creates and updates policies and procedures and ensures all Sterile Processing staff are compliant with those policies and procedures.
  • Identifies opportunities for process improvement and leads implementation of solutions.
