About The Position

The Sterile Processing Department Educator is responsible for staff training and continuous assessments of skills and knowledge related to decontamination, instrument tray assembly, sterilization processes, policies, workflows and standard precautions to ensure patient and staff safety. Their duties include developing educational programs, orienting and mentoring new staff, conducting audits, providing/coordinating in services and assessing for learning improvement needs within the organization. They collaborate with other departments within the healthcare system.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST).
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in the operating room or sterile processing.
  • Previous shift charge, Supervisor or Manager experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Graduate of a Sterile Processing Technician (SPT) program or Scrub Technologists Program or an Applied Science degree in Surgical Technology or an Applied Science degree in Nursing.
  • Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) and Certified Instrument Specialist (CIS).
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in the operating room or sterile processing.

Responsibilities

  • Collect comprehensive data necessary to support sterile processing services
  • Employ strategies to promote workplace safety and health in the sterile processing areas.
  • Guide quality improvement of sterile processing services using key indicators.
  • Support and integrate current evidence into sterile processing services.
  • Provide guidance and coordinate education and competency verification activities for sterile processing personnel regarding professional guidelines, recommended practices, and regulatory and accreditation standards pertinent to sterile processing services.
  • Collaborates with clinical education to maintain records to document ongoing educational and competency verification activities of sterile processing personnel.
  • Provide guidance, support, and constructive feedback to the sterile processing services team and reports to SPD Manager.
  • Able to teach and coach others.
  • Evaluate sterile processing services team members for learning needs.
  • Coordinate departmental onboarding, training, scheduling, and evaluating the performance of technicians and support staff to ensure a competent and motivated team.
  • Provides support for sterile processing services team members to follow organizational policies, regulatory and accreditation standards, and professional guidelines.
  • Exhibit professional interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Pursue professional growth and participate in a professional organization.
  • Maintain privacy and confidentiality of individuals and health information.
  • The employee supports the hospital mission, vision, values, policies, and procedures.
  • Participates in required education for DNV programs as applicable to position (reference program education curriculum).
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
