About The Position

Kamin Science Center is dedicated to inspiring learning and curiosity by connecting science and technology with everyday life. By making science both relevant and fun, the Science Center’s goal is to increase science literacy in the region and motivate young people to seek careers in science and technology. One of the four Carnegie Museums, the Science Center is Pittsburgh’s premier science exploration destination and the region’s most visited museum, reaching more than 500,000 people annually through its hands-on exhibits, camps, classes, and educational programs. Please scroll to the bottom of this page to see information on the starting pay rate. This Full-Time position is eligible for the Carnegie Museums' many Benefits. This is a union position. The STEM Education Coordinator is responsible for the coordination and logistics for Engagement events, camps, classes, competitions, and programs, while participating in a team approach to the smooth development, operation, and delivery of science programs. Duties include creating rosters, supplies ordering and inventory, assisting in preparing and maintaining educational materials, prepping supplies for upcoming events and programs, delivering science programs, and coordinating facility resources with other education team members and other departments and divisions. Responsible for working collaboratively with other departments to develop innovative and popular educational programming and enhancements that advance the vision and mission of Kamin Science Center (KSC). This position may include travel including some overnights and weekends.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree and at least one year of professional experience in program execution is required.
  • Program and/or event planning, coordination, and facilitation required.
  • Requires a highly organized individual who can multitask and work on multiple competing priorities at one time.
  • Ability to manage complex tasks in a dynamic environment is essential.
  • Must possess a collaborative, team-focused attitude; be innovative, creative, and attentive to detail.
  • Candidates must have effective communication skills, both oral and written, as well as presentation skill required.
  • Candidates must be able to work independently and demonstrate good judgement.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle.
  • Must be comfortable working with chemicals, gas cylinders, and liquid nitrogen.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, Microsoft Teams, Demonstration Equipment, Multimedia Theater Equipment, Company Vehicles, and Google Apps.
  • This job is primarily mobile in nature.
  • Programs involve full mobility and require one to be able to lift at least 50 pounds.
  • Position works with foods processed in facilities with nuts, eggs, and other dairy products.
  • Chemicals vary by program.
  • Must attend safety trainings regularly and be current on SDS compliance.
  • Some evening and/or weekend hours are required.
  • The following PA Act 153 clearances, or proof of application of clearances, are required beginning employment and as a condition of continued employment: Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Record Check FBI Fingerprint Criminal Background Check Obtaining the required clearances is completed as part of the new hire process.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with training and motivating staff in select program areas to carry out goals and objectives of program delivery.
  • Assist with training staff on content, classroom management, camps, classes, event, competitions, and program specifics.
  • Hold all team members accountable to the highest standards for performance.
  • Coordinate and oversee instructor and educator staff schedules to ensure effective delivery of all camps, classes, events, competitions, and programs.
  • Assist in the development and execution of the overall programming strategy for out-of-school learning at KSC to provide students and teachers with the highest quality programs and maximize revenue opportunities.
  • Assist in the development of new programs, evaluation of programs, and curriculum development.
  • Organize, maintain, and modify educational and safety materials.
  • Coordinate supplies ordering, inventory, and material preparation.
  • Assist in creating highly effective, accessible, and enjoyable experiences for all participants with the goal of increasing awareness of science and technology concepts, regional innovation, and/or STEM related careers.
  • Present science programming, both large and small format, to the general public and school groups.
  • Ensure that camps, classes, events, competitions, and programs are inclusive to people with varying interests, ages, genders, backgrounds, and abilities.
  • Develop and enact strategies to widen participation and audience reach across STEM camps, classes, events, competitions, and programs.
  • Assist with the development of camps, classes, events, competitions, and programs, and deliver programming on an as-needed basis.
  • Collaborate with other departments on operations and logistics of on-site events.
  • Coordination of all external contributors and exhibitors.
  • Collaborate with LMS manager to plan, upload, and launch virtual camps, classes, events, competitions, and programs.
  • Coordinate logistics and delivery of programs with STEM Education department staff, Special Events, Culinaire, FP&O, Call Center, and other KSC personnel to ensure clear communications and scheduling.
  • Motivate program delivery staff who conduct various education programs, working directly with the visitors, to assure program quality and excellent customer service.
  • Work in concert with supervisor to analyze annual departmental budgets that focus on efficiency, productivity, and sustainable operations.
  • Maintain project budgets and schedules, ensuring that programs achieve the highest level of quality while remaining within budget and meeting all assigned criteria.
  • Assist with preparing and monitoring program budgets to assure fiscal sustainability and overall budget management.
  • Meet or positively exceed annual revenue and expense goals.
  • Identify opportunities to develop collaborative programming opportunities with the other components of Carnegie Museums (CM): Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Carnegie Museum of Art, and the Andy Warhol Museum.
  • Coordinate with creative and community partners to develop and promote programs.
  • Develop, maintain and deepen relationships with related external organizations, such as colleges and universities, industry trade associations, cultural organizations, and others.
  • Actively seek professional growth opportunities and keep abreast of new and emerging technologies, techniques, and applications within both the science/technology field and the museum/visitor experience field to grow professionally and to ensure and improve the relevance, quality, and effectiveness of all departmental programs and priorities.
  • Represent KSC at internal and external meetings and professional networks to promote and ensure widespread and accurate knowledge of KSC’s overall mission and activities.
  • At all times, uphold KSC’s Four Keys of Operation: Safety, Courtesy, The Experience, and Efficiency; interact with all colleagues in a professional and respectful manner in accordance with KSC Community Norms.
  • Serve at all times as an exemplary advocate for and model of KSC’s values and demonstrate commitment to inclusion and accessibility efforts at the museum.
  • Intentionally look for and foster opportunities to collaborate with other KSC departments and/or CM components to eliminate programmatic silos and create a holistic visitor experience.
  • Provide “front line” support, as needed, over the course of the year during times of peak visitation (e.g. holidays, special events, STEM competitions, STEM camps, etc.)
  • Maintain basic departmental responsibilities (timely communication, calendar management, regular availability for meetings between 8:00am-4:00pm, Monday-Friday, etc.)
