A Steerman plays a critical role in the safe transport of oversized and heavy haul loads. This position is responsible for controlling the rear axles of large trailers to ensure the load tracks properly through turns, tight job sites, and restricted roadways. While the Steerman does not control speed or braking, their precise steering is essential for safe navigation and may fall under CMV driver regulations depending on the configuration and state requirements. Additional responsibilities, the Steerman may operate as a chase pilot, following behind oversized loads to provide a safety buffer and alert other drivers. In this capacity, the Steerman communicates with the truck driver via radio regarding traffic conditions, hazards, and route challenges. The role includes managing traffic flow using warning signs and lights, ensuring compliance with transport regulations, and assisting with roadside inspections or minor mechanical issues when necessary.
