About The Position

The Steelworker Apprentice/Advance Instructor will provide support for the Naval Construction Training Center located in Gulfport, MS. Instructor personnel are designated by the command for the Advanced Steel Worker School.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in structural steel fabrication, welding techniques, and blueprint interpretation.
  • Strong knowledge of rigging and structural assembly methods.
  • Familiarity with U.S. Navy construction standards and training protocols.
  • Excellent communication and instructional skills, with the ability to teach diverse learners.
  • Minimum 10 years of steelworker/welding experience.
  • Skilled welder with documented experience in metal identification, Gas Metal Arc (GMA) welding, Gas Tungsten Arc (GTA) welding, Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), and operating power shears.
  • Ability to pass a background check.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous teaching or mentoring experience is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Provide apprentice level training in construction mathematics, blueprint reading and basic layout, gas welding equipment, gas cutting, gas welding and brazing, silver brazing, vertical and flat arc welding, reinforcing steel, and fiber line.
  • Provide apprentice level training in basic sheet metal layout, pattern development, fabrication, and pre-engineered buildings including installation and maintenance of doors.
  • Provide entry level training in a course currently under development that will replace both the SW Class A Block 0 and Block 1 courses.
  • Provide in-depth instruction for a course covering the necessary knowledge and skills to perform as a Welding Supervisor, including management systems for welding supervisors, requirements of welds, welding processes, welding metallurgy, welding symbols, welding instructions, welding economics, welding standards, welding inspection, health and safety, and weld reports.
  • Provide in-depth instruction to steelworker trainees on pattern development and layout for sheet metal ductwork, including transitions, elbow fabrication, and ductwork transitions.
  • Provide in-depth instruction on interpreting construction prints and specifications, material estimating of reinforcing steel, creating reinforcing steel bend schedules, and skills in cutting, bending, tying, and placing reinforcing steel.
  • Provide in-depth instruction on Oxy-acetylene Brazing, Cutting and Welding (OAW) on brass, copper, and mild carbon steel, including equipment setup and various welding techniques.
  • Provide knowledge and skills in pipe layout with steel squares, calculating welding offsets, and using pipe layout tools.
  • Provide knowledge and skills to perform Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) on structural steel and structural steel pipe, including equipment setup and various welding techniques.
  • Provide knowledge and skills necessary to identify, set up, and maintain all items in the NMCB Combination Electric Arc Inert-Gas Welding Kit, and perform gas metal arc and gas tungsten arc welding.
