Step into the heart of steelmaking Picture your first shift at United States Steel — Granite City Works: you gear up, check your tools, and head to the production floor where massive equipment hums and materials move nonstop. As a Utility Technician supporting mill operations, you’ll help keep the line moving by handling materials, operating basic and mobile equipment, and pitching in on equipment upkeep across the plant. A day in the life Use hand tools, pneumatic equipment, gauges, oxygen lances, power-actuated tools, and torches to support production and service units. Handle, transport, and process materials and product across the mill. Work safely around hot, heavy, or sharp materials and hazardous chemicals. Assist with equipment inspections and basic maintenance tasks. Operate mobile equipment in a heavy industrial setting. Adapt to changing assignments in different mill areas — conditions can be hot, cold, dirty, greasy, wet, and noisy, and you may work near molten metal. Your growth path After brief on-the-job training, you will be expected to move into a Utility Technician role operating overhead and mobile cranes of various sizes and types, tractors, trucks, dozers, loaders, boom trucks, and feeders.
