About The Position

The Steel Buyer is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining sourcing and supply chain strategies to meet the steel and non‑ferrous metal requirements of the Business Unit. This position manages supplier relationships, sourcing processes, and material flow with a primary focus on bar, plate, pipe, zinc, and other metals. The Steel Buyer works directly with mills and service centers supporting significant annual spend and plays a key role in ensuring cost, quality, delivery, and inventory goals are achieved. #LI-KR1A Day In The LifeProcurement & Commodity Management Source major commodity items and manage supply chain activities for steel and non‑ferrous metals. Manage all sourcing project stages from initial planning through completion Assist with make‑versus‑buy decisions. Develop and implement cost‑saving initiatives to meet cost‑reduction goals  Supplier Performance & Issue Resolution Maintain records on the supply base including quotes, supplier quality, supplier performance, and material cost Work with Quality Assurance and suppliers to process rejects and obtain corrective actions. Address delivery issues and ensure accurate supply commitments Cross-Functional Coordination Work closely with manufacturing management to ensure inventory goals are met and lead times are accurate. Work with Engineering and Marketing to source and schedule material as needed Coordinate material planning activities with Operations and Planning teams regarding inventory, obsolete materials, and production needs.  System Accuracy & Data Integrity Maintain accurate delivery dates and purchase order information in SAP Maintain and update item purchase records, including pricing, delivery, and performance data.  Continuous Improvement & Process Discipline Follow Purchasing Procedures and Hubbell Standard Practices. Support cost, quality, and delivery improvements within the commodity supply chain Participate in process improvement and strategic sourcing initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred; equivalent experience will be considered.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office with strong Excel skills.
  • Purchasing experience in a manufacturing environment preferred.
  • Negotiation skills: experience working with steel and non‑ferrous metals preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of ISO standards related to purchasing
  • Ability to travel and work across multiple company locations as needed

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with scrap metal sales is a plus
