About The Position

The Statistician contributes, largely independently, statistical, and epidemiological consultation activities within the Division of Biostatistics of the Department of Preventive Medicine at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. This position performs data management and data analysis; implements statistical analysis plans; documents projects and meetings with biomedical researchers (clients); and assists in the development of campus -wide educational content, programs, and seminars, including articles, seminars, websites, and multimedia content.

Requirements

  • EDUCATION: Master's degree in Statistics, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Public Health, or other quantitative science. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)
  • EXPERIENCE: Two (2) years of experience with database or records management, data analysis training, and experience using R; OR Bachelor’s Degree and four (4) years of experience with database or records management, data analysis training, and experience using R.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of statistical concepts and principles.
  • Fluency in R, including writing functions to automate tasks and generate reports .
  • Ability to work independently and execute analysis under the direction of a faculty member or senior statistician.
  • Ability to spot common problems in study design, statistical analysis, and client interactions.
  • Ability to manipulate messy data into a tractable form.
  • Ability to interpret statistical output and communicate the output in an easily understood form.
  • Strong project management skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with high-throughput biological data (genetics, transcriptomics, metabolomics) (Strongly Preferred)
  • Fluency in at least one additional general-purpose programming/statistical language beyond R (C, C++, C#, Python, Julia, or SAS) (Preferred)
  • Knowledge of version control systems such as Git (Preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Plans and performs data management and data analysis with oversight from faculty.
  • Performs advanced data management, including merging data from different sources and performing simple database tasks.
  • Generates an analysis plan, carries out the data analysis specified therein, documents the code, interprets the results, and communicates information using clear figures, tables, and text.
  • Collaborates with researchers, faculty, research staff, and trainees to assess the statistical needs under supervision.
  • Provides technical and educational assistance to clients undertaking research analysis and assists with study design and data collection planning.
  • Contributes to other education and training activities, including writing expository articles, editing articles provided by faculty members, giving expository talks, and preparing audiovisual materials.
  • Provides hands-on training to staff, faculty, residents, and investigators on proper use of statistical procedures and software.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
