About The Position

The primary purpose of this Vital Statistics Statistician position is to support the statistical needs of the Division of Public Health. Assistance focuses on the statistical analysis of data related to births, deaths, fetal deaths, induced abortions, marriages, and divorces. The Vital Statistics Statistician position involves responding to a variety of statistical requests from a wide range of SCHS clients – including health professionals within local, state, and federal governments, universities, statisticians, computer programmers, media, as well as the general public. The Vital Statistics Statistician is responsible for analyzing Vital Statistics data. This Statistician is required to create ad hoc computer programs to analyze Vital Statistics data, interpret, and report statistical findings in a clear and concise manner. This employee will use statistical knowledge to make appropriate decisions about the use of Vital Statistics data for the development of ad hoc reports. This position requires an individual with proficiency and in health research methods, computer programming and statistical analyses using the SAS programming language, and professional/technical writing.

Requirements

  • Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they have the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement.
  • Master’s degree in statistics, mathematics, data science, data analytics, psychometrics or measurement and evaluation from an appropriately credited institution and one year of experience in data analysis.
  • Bachelor’s degree in statistics, mathematics, data science, data analytics, psychometrics or measurement and evaluation from an appropriately credited institution and three years of experience in study design and data analysis.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Extensive experience with statistical software such as SAS is required.
  • Experience with vital statistics files.
  • Experience writing original programs or modify existing programs as needed.
  • Experience verifying the work of their colleagues; checking the validity of SAS programs of other Statisticians in the Statistical Services Unit.
