BRIEF POSTING DESCRIPTION: The P JG ENVIRONMENTAL COMPLIANCE Department of the P ENVIRONMENTAL Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has 1 Management vacancy available. (Role: Professional) JOB FUNCTION: Administers and maintains water treatment and chemical quality control programs at the power generating stations to ensure the continued long-term operation of the plant systems. Also performs as the system owner of the unit demineralizer water process.

Requirements

Thorough knowledge of power plant chemistry with emphasis in inorganic and metallurgy chemistry normally obtained through college level courses or equivalent work experience.
Proficient knowledge of: State and Federal environmental regulations applicable to power plant operations.
Power plant steam generator equipment and components.
Power plant water chemistry programs obtained through work experience (water/steam chemistry, demineralizer (ion exchange & Reverse Osmosis), wastewater, waste disposal).
Electric Power Research Institute and its research chemistry program (#226).
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and SAP.
Ability to effectively communicate with various levels of the organization, both verbally and in written communication.
Possess leadership skills and be able to work with a variety of individuals.
Ability to independently troubleshoot issues as they arise and manage resolution with various levels of the organization. Must be able to execute and work collaboratively to see issues through to resolution.
Must be able to read and understand power plant drawings, equipment diagrams and chemical data charts.
Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and adapt to rapidly changing priorities.
Must have or be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii driver’s license. Must meet the standards for driving positions stated in the Hiring Standards for Driving Positions policy. These standards may be adjusted periodically to meet business and safety objectives.
Minimum of 2 years of related work experience in a utility power plant or equivalent.
Minimum of 2 years of chemical laboratory experience.

Responsibilities

Administrator of water chemistry programs. Primary duties include: Create and maintain unit specific water chemistry programs to ensure high unit reliability, efficiency, and longevity.
Create and maintain data tracking programs and provide monthly reports to Operations to ensure workplace performance standards are being monitored.
Monthly reports logged to measure the operational personnel’s performance in adhering to water chemistry programs.
Data trends tracked to show the status of boiler corrosion rates and steam quality entering the turbine.
Prevent generating unit forced outages due to water chemistry control deficiencies.
Execute weekly audit of station water chemistry data and programs.
Proficient in performing all chemistry procedures tasks outlined for Operations.
Oversee and provide technical guidance and supervision of these work processes: Unit specific guidelines for startups.
Unit chemical cleaning – Ethylenediaminetetraacetic Acid (EDTA)
Provide the written chemical cleaning procedure based upon lab analysis and evaluations.
Wastewater treatment facility – Responsible for ensuring that powerplant waste streams are adequately treated to produce effluent that meets discharge standards.
Train various plant personnel (OPS, Maintenance, Planners, Engineers) in the water chemistry sector.
Unit specific water chemistry, wastewater treatment facility (chemistry related).
Ensure safe practices are used in chemical handling operations.
System owner of the demineralizer systems at respective generating stations. Responsible for the overall procurement, development, integration, modification, operation, maintenance of the demineralizer system and review operational datasheets.
Subject matter expert for demineralizer system.
Compose and update procedures related to operation and maintenance.
Create work packages related to the system.
Lead informative pre-job briefings.
Coordinate with vendors as needed.
Supervise the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) technical information integration. Required to commit 16-hours monthly as the Company’s representative to EPRI’s Program 226 -- Boiler and Turbine Steam and Cycle Chemistry.
Network with other utility companies nationwide to collaborate and define industry best practices.
Assumes the duties of the Supervisor, Environmental Compliance when necessary.
Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.
