About The Position

The Washington State Patrol (WSP) is seeking dedicated individuals to join as State Trooper Cadets. This role involves upholding the law and ensuring public safety as general authority peace officers. Trooper Cadets will undergo rigorous training and will have the opportunity to serve their communities while developing a career in law enforcement. The position requires a commitment to public service, integrity, and the ability to work independently in various situations.

Requirements

  • Be a United States Citizen or a Lawful Permanent Resident.
  • Be 19½ years old at the time of application.
  • Must speak, write, and read English.
  • Possess a valid driver's license that is non-probationary and non-restricted.
  • Have a high school diploma, GED, or an associate's degree or higher from an accredited institution.
  • Successfully pass a pre-employment polygraph examination.
  • Pass a comprehensive background investigation.
  • Pass a departmental medical examination.
  • Pass a departmental psychological examination.
  • Obtain and maintain a Washington State driver's license during employment.
  • Be willing to work weekends, holidays, and rotating shifts.
  • Be free from the use of narcotics or controlled substances.
  • Be willing to accept statewide assignments.

Nice To Haves

  • Current military personnel within six months of ETS date.
  • Good moral character with no history of domestic violence.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct active patrol of assigned area and respond to calls for service during day and/or night shifts.
  • Observe and identify condition of vehicles to enforce compliance with laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Use speed-measuring devices to estimate vehicle speeds and identify suspicious behaviors.
  • Conduct proper and safe high-risk traffic stops, including issuing warnings, tickets, or making arrests.
  • Operate patrol vehicle under normal and emergency situations while multitasking.
  • Perform high-risk vehicle maneuvers including pursuit immobilization techniques and roadblocks.
  • Pursue potential violators on foot or in a patrol vehicle.
  • Search suspects and vehicles for weapons, paraphernalia, or evidence of crimes.
  • Communicate effectively with individuals in emotional states.
  • Identify impairment and perform sobriety tests on subjects.
  • Detain and arrest subjects using appropriate restraints.
  • Inform violators of their legal violations and procedures.
  • Use appropriate force to protect life and property.
  • Clear roadways from disabled vehicles and other hazards.
  • Assist stranded or injured motorists with various services.
  • Inspect and maintain operability of issued equipment.
  • Provide manual traffic control at events as needed.
  • Transport individuals in patrol vehicles as required.
  • Coordinate towing and storage of vehicles.
  • Direct law enforcement personnel and the public at incident scenes until relieved by a superior officer.
  • Respond to critical incidents and civil disorder to restore order.
  • Physically remove individuals from dangerous situations.
  • Survey damage and collect evidence at crime scenes.
  • Investigate collisions and suspected criminal activity.
  • Maintain knowledge of court-related procedures and laws.
  • Obtain and serve arrest warrants and book violators accordingly.
  • Interview suspects and witnesses to gather information for investigations.
  • Document evidence and situations for reports of investigation.
  • Testify in court regarding arrests and investigations.
  • Administer basic emergency first aid to victims.
  • Notify next of kin in the event of a loss of life.

Benefits

  • Monthly salary of $5,493.00 during training, increasing to $6,505.00 upon promotion to Trooper.
  • Step increases after six months of commissioned service until the fifth year.
  • 2% longevity increase every five years after reaching five years of service.
