About The Position

The State Park Peace Officer (Ranger/Lifeguard) position is a Peace Officer role requiring external candidates to meet minimum qualifications set by the Department of Human Resources. Eligible candidates must be currently eligible or eligible for reinstatement as a PC 830.2, California State Peace Officer. Positions are available across various counties in California. Incumbents are sworn California State Park Peace Officers with authority extending statewide. Responsibilities include patrolling park grounds, enforcing regulations, writing reports, making arrests, conducting investigations, performing search and rescue activities, and providing emergency medical assistance. Specialized assignments may include cliff rescue, ski patrol, scuba diving, and more. Protective equipment is required, and incumbents undergo regular training in physical defensive tactics and firearms use.

Requirements

  • Must be an external candidate and meet minimum qualifications established by the Department of Human Resources.
  • Must be currently eligible or eligible for reinstatement as a PC 830.2, California State Peace Officer.
  • Must pass a background investigation, voice stress analysis, medical clearance, psychological evaluation, and drug screening.
  • No felony conviction.
  • For Lifeguard classification: Six months of experience performing lifeguard duties in non-pool settings and sufficient swimming ability for lifesaving activities.

Nice To Haves

  • Current POST Basic Course Completion Certification or higher.
  • Minimum age of 21.
  • Possession of a valid California driver's license.
  • Successful completion of two years (60 semester units) of study from a State accredited college or university.

Responsibilities

  • Patrol park grounds by vehicle, boat, foot, or horse patrol.
  • Enforce park regulations and issue citations.
  • Write reports and make physical arrests for misdemeanors, felonies, and warrants.
  • Conduct criminal and administrative investigations.
  • Take command in emergencies and perform search and rescue activities.
  • Assist in wildland and structural fire suppression.
  • Provide emergency medical assistance and aid.
  • Perform traffic control and radio dispatching.
  • May perform specialized assignments in cliff rescue, ski patrol, scuba diving, and more.

Benefits

  • Starting base pay of $6,215.00 per month.
  • Geographic Recruitment and Retention pay ranging from $200 to $350 per month.
  • Longevity Pay of 2% to 9% after 17 years of service.
  • Education Pay for holding certain qualifications.
