Requirements

  • 5+ years of state and local tax experience, including multi-state compliance (both sales/use and income/franchise).
  • Strong working knowledge of nexus rules, apportionment methodologies, and state filing requirements.
  • Significant hands on experience with Avalara (configuration, workflow review, data troubleshooting).
  • Experience with P21 or similar ERP systems.
  • Strong analytical skills and comfort working with large data sets.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership abilities.
  • Ability to manage deadlines across multiple jurisdictions and projects.

Nice To Haves

  • Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field preferred but not required—equivalent experience is highly valued. CPA or CMI-Sales Tax certificate preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee multi-state sales & use tax compliance, including return preparation, filings, and remittances.
  • Supervise the monthly reconciliation and review of sales tax liability accounts.
  • Manage exemption certificate processes and taxability matrices.
  • Lead periodic reviews of sales tax calculation accuracy within Avalara and P21.
  • Assist with the preparation and filing of state income and franchise tax returns.
  • Assist with apportionment calculations (sales, property, payroll factors).
  • Assist with calculating state adjustments, modifications, and supporting schedules.
  • Identify exposure areas and implement risk reduction strategies across jurisdictions.
  • Monitor Avalara workflows to ensure data accuracy, correct tax coding, and end to end compliance integrity.
  • Evaluate P21 transaction data for proper tax calculation, sourcing, and reporting.
  • Partner with IT and Operations to resolve tax data issues, improve system functionality, and drive automation.
  • Lead nexus studies across sales, income/franchise, and use tax categories.
  • Evaluate exposure and recommend when voluntary disclosure agreements (VDAs) are appropriate.
  • Manage VDA submissions and coordinate with states or outside advisors.
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory changes impacting nexus and apportionment.
  • Serve as primary contact for state and local audits.
  • Prepare audit responses, support documentation requests, and manage timelines.
  • Conduct technical research on state tax regulations, rulings, and statutory changes.
  • Communicate complex tax findings to leadership in clear, actionable terms.
