The Starter is responsible for coordinating activities of workers, horses, and jockeys prior to each race by performing the following duties personally or through subordinates. Determines entry sequence into starting gate and gives directions to riders and other track personnel to get horses into position for horse race: Evaluates performance and training record and observes horse's behavior to determine entry sequence. Directs entry of horse and rider into starting gate according to planned sequence and stall number. Gives directions to track personnel to assist rider when horse refuses to enter starting gate. Reports undue starting delay to racing officials. Presses button to open gate automatically when horses are correctly aligned. Recommend removal of horse unfit to start race. Schedule morning workouts for horses requiring familiarization with starting gate procedures Provides input for preparation of the department budget and monitors expenditure of funds in budget. Will abide by all safety requirements as outlined in the Safety Manual or as required by individual departments and/or job functions. All other duties as assigned by management. RISK MANAGEMENT – will manage risk factors within the company department or division employed, in such a way as to eliminate company exposure to insurance claims and legal/court challenges. Ensures that all company, department or division activities and operations are carried out in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and laws governing business operations. This includes but is not limited to adherence to Human Resource, safety and workers’ compensation policies and procedures.
