About The Position

As a Start Up Technician III, you'll operate as a senior-level, highly skilled technician and field leader in the commissioning, startup, warranty service, and troubleshooting of complex HVAC and mechanical equipment and systems. With full proficiency across all phases of startup and warranty processes, you'll independently handle challenging assignments, diagnose advanced issues, lead and mentor Technicians I and II, and coordinate effectively with other trades, vendors, customers, and project stakeholders. This role demands technical mastery, strong leadership, proactive problem-solving, and uncompromising commitment to safety and quality. Requirements

  • 5+ years of progressive experience in equipment start-up, commissioning, warranty service, field troubleshooting, or related trades, with proven ability to independently handle complex systems.
  • High school diploma or GED required; technical/vocational training or associate degree in HVAC, mechanical systems, electrical technology, or related field strongly preferred.
  • EPA Section 608 Universal Certification required; valid driver's license and clean driving record required; OSHA 30-hour certification encouraged (company support provided).
  • Ability to regularly lift and carry up to 50–75 lbs, climb ladders/scaffolding/stairs, work in confined spaces or at heights, bend/kneel/crouch, reach overhead, and use tools/equipment for extended periods; frequent standing, walking, manual dexterity, and physical stamina required to handle demanding field conditions.
  • Advanced diagnostic, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills across mechanical, electrical, refrigeration, and controls systems.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting complex blueprints, schematics, sequences of operation, and technical documentation.
  • Strong leadership and mentoring abilities with excellent communication and customer service skills.

Responsibilities

  • Champion and enforce the highest level of safety compliance at all times, including company policies, OSHA standards, site-specific requirements, and industry best practices; proactively identify hazards and lead safety briefings or corrections.
  • Read, interpret, and utilize complex blueprints, schematics, sequences of operation, control diagrams, and technical documentation to verify installations and guide commissioning activities.
  • Independently perform complete start-up, functional testing, and commissioning of complex equipment and systems, ensuring optimal performance, efficiency, and compliance with specifications.
  • Execute all responsibilities associated with EPA Section 608 certification, including refrigerant recovery, evacuation, charging, leak detection, and regulatory documentation.
  • Identify, diagnose, and resolve complicated mechanical, electrical, refrigeration, controls, and system-level issues during start-up or warranty service; develop and implement effective repair strategies.
  • Proactively identify improper installations, potential failures, or performance risks before they impact operations; recommend corrective actions and coordinate implementation.
  • Lead, direct, and mentor Start Up Technicians I and II in the field; provide hands-on training, quality oversight, and performance feedback to ensure team success.
  • Coordinate and direct other trades, subcontractors, and vendors on-site to resolve issues, complete punch-list items, or facilitate system integration.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for customers, general contractors, project managers, and engineers; communicate clearly and professionally regarding progress, issues, resolutions, change orders, and warranty obligations.
  • Document all work comprehensively and accurately, including detailed start-up reports, warranty service records, diagnostic findings, photos, recommendations, and time/material logs; ensure all paperwork is neat, complete, and submitted promptly.
  • Report complex issues, trends, recurring problems, or customer concerns to the Start Up & Warranty Manager for escalation and resolution.
  • Perform advanced troubleshooting, system performance analysis, and optimization adjustments to achieve design intent and exceed customer expectations.
  • Maintain personal tools, company equipment, vehicles, and job sites in exemplary condition.
