About The Position

A standardized patient is a person trained in a case portrayal to provide a patient's health history, demonstrate physical exam findings, display emotions and/or other behaviors such as body language in a realistic, repeatable and consistent manner. Once the case portrayal is completed, the SP evaluates a learner's clinical skills using standardized assessment tools. SPs provide feedback on learners' communication skills either verbally or as "written feedback." Standardized patients may work one-on-one with a learner or with a group of learners. They work with all levels of learners from beginning to advanced learners including health care professional students to practicing physicians, nurses and other health care professionals. The simulated patient encounters are designed to enable experiential learning in a safe and professional environment and accurately assess clinical skills performance. Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Excellent communication skills, including listening and recall skills
  • Ability to accurately and convincingly maintain a specified character as trained.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule.
  • Ability to follow directions and incorporate trainer feedback.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in theater, health care profession or education
  • Experience as a standardized patient.

Responsibilities

  • Memorizes case script information detailing the patient's health history such as current complaint/situation, personal and family medical history, medication names and dosages, social background and lifestyle.
  • Demonstrates convincing emotions and behaviors such as pain portrayal, worry or emotional distress.
  • May demonstrate accurate physical exam signs and symptoms such as localized discomfort, limited or abnormal movement.
  • Presents case information in a standardized manner to each learner.
  • Maintains patient portrayal at same time focuses attention on learners' clinical performance in order to evaluate their skills.
  • Participates in group training and mentorship of entry-level standardized patients.
  • Maintains confidentiality of information related to cases, learners behaviors and feedback evaluations.
  • Provides educationally constructive feedback within structured format as appropriate to the position.
  • Allows video recording of patient encounters with learners to be used for educational purposes.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
