Now celebrating its 50th Anniversary Season, Steppenwolf Theatre Company has been a cultural leader in Chicago and model for theatre companies in the United States and around the world. Formed by a collective of actors in 1976, the ensemble represents a remarkable cross-section of actors, directors, playwrights and stage managers. The Stage Management Apprentice is a part of Steppenwolf’s Workforce Development Programs. This is a temporary full-time position. Schedule is according to the production calendar. Depending on show assignment, apprenticeship can run anytime from August 2026 - August 2027. Specific responsibilities will include: Steppenwolf offers two stage management apprenticeships. Each apprentice is assigned to two or three of the productions in our Subscription Series. Apprentices work with our professional stage management teams from pre-production through final performance. In the process, they will have the opportunity to maintain paperwork, take line notes, be on book, preset and run shows, and rehearse understudies, among other duties. Stage management apprentices are required to attend daytime rehearsals and become an active running crew member during evening performances. These are full-time paid apprenticeships while the productions are in rehearsal and during the run. Stage management apprentices are not eligible to earn EMC points. Since 1984, Steppenwolf Theatre Company has offered internships to students, graduates, and others to experience the inner workings of a professional theater from every angle. Since that time, the company has developed a collection of programs purposed to identify, train and mentor a diverse group of students, graduates and early-career professionals in arts administration, stage management and production. After three years of these programs being paused, Steppenwolf is excited to relaunch the program with a renewed vision.
