The Role System Engineers are responsible for partitioning and allocating product, feature and system functionality to implementation teams. Safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance are factors considered in system design with the goal of optimizing performance, design, testability, and deployability. System engineers identify use cases, define functional technical requirements, enable robust implementation designs, and ensure built-in quality with test definition and traceability.

Requirements

  • BS in Systems, Electrical, Mechanical, Biomechanical, Controls Engineering, or equivalent
  • 10+ years of Frontal, Side, and Rollover Crashworthiness experience
  • Demonstrated expert knowledge in restraint system deployments and controls
  • Demonstrated expert knowledge in global regulatory and consumer metrics pertaining to restraints including frontal, side, and rollover evaluations
  • Highly skilled and experienced in occupant restraints balancing and optimization relative to frontal, side and rollover evaluations
  • Highly skilled and fluent in GM’s global restraint development/integration/validation processes
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency in leading effective multi-disciplinary, and globally distributed teams
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement innovative solutions to challenging problems
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively within multi-disciplinary teams comprised of team members from multiple SMT organizations
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Demonstrated leadership skills
  • Proven track record of delivering on-time with quality
  • Systems Engineering experience
  • RTC, DOORS/DNG and FIT knowledge & experience
  • DFSS Black Belt
  • Ability to travel as needed (minimal, 5% at the absolute max)
  • Ability to legally operate a motor vehicle

Responsibilities

  • Manage Seat, Belt and Interior Sensing systems sub-group’s projects and workload across several Systems Engineers (SE) and System Integration Engineers (SIE)
  • Translate business objectives to actionable deliverables for the Seat, Belt, and Interior Sensing Systems sub-group
  • Develop and execute the sub-group’s training, and tests
  • Collaborate with other Occupant Protections Systems sub-group leads to ensure group’s overall success
  • Mentor, coach, and train Seat, Belt, and Interior Sensing SE’s and SIE’s and provide extended influence over the rest of Occupant Protection group team members
  • Provide technical leadership and supervision across all Seat, Belt, and Interior Sensing systems TRB’s and represent sub-group in Occupant Protection Systems CCB, and other SMT/Safety/Performance organizations’ forums (e.g., SMT Core-PDT’s, RADs, GSSLT, PAC, etc.)
  • Lead the Seat, Belt, and Interior Sensing Systems sub-group to develop, release, maintain and refine Feature / System Technical Specifications and FMEAs (plus ownership for at least one of the features)
  • Lead the development of consistency in requirements and failure modes across the Seat, Belt, and Interior Sensing Systems
  • Collaborate with Systems Safety, Feature Owners and/or Safety Vehicle Performance Owners to develop and improve customer focused vehicle level features and systems
  • Collaborate on Validation and Verification plan (Mechanical, Electrical, and Controls)
  • Perform physical and functional partitioning of a feature and Fault Tree Analysis
  • Lead the development and issue resolution of any and all components integration issues that impact features and systems
  • Work with subsystem and component teams to optimize system design including lessons learned
  • Support “Speak Up For Safety” and “Emerging Potential Issues” that are Systems issues relevant to Seat, Belt, and Interior Sensing Systems
  • Manage S PRTS issues that require Seat, Belt, and Interior Sensing systems support
  • Lead Criteria / Best Practice / Test procedure development
  • Establish cross-functional work groups to address system level issues
  • Supports selection of new employees
  • Be responsible for System Engineering support during all phases of vehicle development through production
  • EPIC ownership and/or mentoring
  • Lead and/or coach benchmarking and clinic activities
  • Ensure program applicability of system variants
  • Collaboration with PVEs on Validation and Verification plan of FTS/STS requirements
  • Some level of travel may be required to support system level concerns for vehicle programs.
