About The Position

As a part of the Payments team, the Staff Software Engineer will be responsible for software architecture, design, review, and monitoring of ongoing software development, providing solutions. In this role, you will be responsible for spearheading technical solutions, developing and implementing new software, maintaining and improving existing software, and supporting applications in production. You will design and develop highly available, scalable, performant, and highly resilient systems. Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. Western Union will not sponsor applicants for work visas for this position. The work shift is hybrid, with an expectation to work from the office a minimum of three days a week.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field with 8+ years of professional experience, or Master’s degree with 6+ years.
  • Strong experience in backend API development, third‑party integrations, security, and scalability.
  • Expertise in Microservices Architecture, Service‑Oriented Architecture (SOA), and object‑oriented design principles.
  • Hands-on experience with REST API design and implementation of API design patterns.
  • Proficiency with databases including RDBMS (e.g., Oracle) and NoSQL technologies (Couchbase, Cassandra, etc.).
  • Strong knowledge of messaging systems including JMS and Apache Kafka.
  • Practical experience deploying and managing applications on AWS or GCP.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate with partners globally.

  • Payment Domain /Fintech experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Design & implement high-performance, mission-critical Payments applications & execute large-scale technology modernization projects and improve existing software.
  • Design and implement solutions using technologies involving JAVA, Spring boot, AWS, Kafka, SQL- NoSql databases, TIBCO products.
  • Troubleshoot application issues and coordinate issue resolution with operations, functional, and technical teams.
  • Work with a software development team and Service providers in a geographically distributed structure.
  • Work independently on complex projects.
  • Demonstrate strong capabilities in assessing business needs while providing creative and effective solutions in conformance to emerging technology standards.
  • Interface and collaborate with other engineers in geographically distributed development centers.
  • Apply Agile methodology daily and follow Definition of Done (DoD) process for better quality by maintaining 80% and unit test coverage and 70% integration test coverage.
  • Develop technical & domain expertise and apply to solving product challenges.
  • Thorough code reviews.
  • Engineering support for Incidents and releases.
