About The Position

Role summary: Walmart is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to lead the development and delivery of scalable platform capabilities.As a Staff Engineer supporting the Software Asset Management arm of our Technology Strategy team, you will assist in the execution of Global Tech's strategic goals by helping to drive operational excellence, reducing software risk, and enabling effective decision-making through accurate data and reporting. About the team: The Technology Strategy team drives the execution of Global Tech’s priorities and delivers actionable insights to guide decision-making. The team emphasizes operational excellence and works cross-functionally to deliver impactful solutions that advance the company’s strategic initiatives.The Software Asset Management division of the Tech Strategy team focuses on implementing and maturing processes, workflows, and governance structures to ensure compliance, cost optimization, and lifecycle management for all software assets across the organization.As a (SAM) Engineer you will be responsible for strategically managing the organization's software assets throughout their entire lifecycle, ensuring compliance with licensing agreements and optimizing software usage.

Requirements

  • Proven expertise in software development lifecycle including coding, testing, deployment, and maintenance.
  • Strong knowledge of cloud-native architecture principles such as microservices, containers, and automation.
  • Experience with AI/ML integration using languages like Python, JavaScript, Java, or C++.
  • Ability to design scalable, secure, and maintainable software solutions following best practices.
  • Proficiency with configuration management tools such as Puppet and software packaging tools like Flexera AdminStudio.
  • Excellent collaboration skills to work effectively across teams
  • Commitment to continuous improvement, innovation, and delivering high-quality technical solutions.
  • Knowledge of ITAM and IT Service Management
  • Understanding various IT resource management models (e.g., subscription-based services, enterprise technology budgeting frameworks)
  • Familiarity with vendor governance standards and global policy compliance (e.g., ISO 27001)
  • Practical experience navigating and addressing internal and external compliance audits
  • Awareness of usage policies for proprietary and open-source resources, including risk management strategies
  • Optimizing resource allocation and addressing inefficiencies across operational workflows
  • Data analysis and reporting skills to generate actionable insights about asset usage, compliance, and optimization
  • Understanding of software distribution modes (e.g., installed locally, virtualized apps, or containerized apps via Kubernetes/Docker)
  • Experience with IT Monitoring and Operations Tools
  • Proficiency with IT operations platforms (e.g., ServiceNow)
  • Change controls, CMDB, APIs, integrations
  • Familiarity with asset monitoring tools for tracking resource performance, availability, and usage
  • Knowledge of popular IT service delivery frameworks such as ITIL or COBIT for aligning IT operations with organizational objectives
  • Experience with systems for hardware and software inventory management (e.g., Flexera, Zylo), including deployment and monitoring tools (e.g., SCCM, JAMF, BMC)
  • Ability to analyze operational data to provide actionable insights into utilization, allocation, and optimization challenges
  • Server administration and upkeep
  • Strong Technical Background in IT Architecture, Infrastructure and Cloud Services
  • Proficiency with IT infrastructure (e.g., server architecture, enterprise networking) and its impact on operations
  • Familiarity with cloud-based platforms and services (e.g., Azure, GCP)
  • Insights into virtualization technologies (e.g., VMware, Nutanix, Citrix, Hyper-V) and corresponding licensing intricacies
  • Knowledge of cross-environment integrations, from legacy systems to hybrid or fully cloud-hosted workflows
  • Familiarity with containerized environments (e.g., Kubernetes, Docker) and their operational potential
  • Understanding dynamic technology practices (e.g., DevOps, CI/CD) to identify unused or underutilized resources
  • Record of platform ownership including owning IT security requests (e.g., SSPs)
  • Must work effectively across teams such as procurement, finance, IT security, legal and compliance to standardize IT practices.
  • Strong analytical skills are also essential for interpreting data and delivering insights to stakeholders.
  • Option 1: Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 4 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.
  • Option 2: 6 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Computer Information Systems, Software Engineering, or related area and 2 years' experience in software engineering or related area

Responsibilities

  • Software Inventory & Tracking: Maintain a comprehensive and accurate record of all software assets across the organization.
  • License Compliance: Ensure the company adheres to all software license terms and conditions to avoid legal and financial risks. Drive compliance reporting and remediation efforts for regulatory and audit purposes.
  • Software Usage & Optimization: Monitor how software is being used to identify underutilized or redundant software, helping to reduce waste and maximize investments.
  • Software Lifecycle Management: Oversee the software from its purchase and installation to its eventual retirement or migration to new versions.
  • Technical Expertise: Understand software development lifecycles and the technical needs of the organization to ensure software meets business requirements.
