This position is mission-critical for expanding Hinge Health's impact beyond physical therapy by addressing the underlying causes of persistent pain, helping millions achieve measurable reductions in pain through innovative AI-powered therapeutic interventions. As the Staff Engineer for the Brain Health team, you will lead the technical architecture and development of innovative brain health solutions at Hinge Health. You will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team building agentic AI systems for pain reprocessing therapy and mindfulness interventions, while also architecting a unified education service that delivers pain science knowledge and mindset strategies to our members. As a Staff Engineer, you should be passionate about building high-quality software, have a deep understanding of AI systems, and be excited to work on complex challenges at scale. We enjoy a continuous deployment DevOps culture, and take owner-operator pride in supporting our code in production. Our stack includes Go, gRPC, Temporal, AWS, Kubernetes, Docker, PostgreSQL, Redis, Node.js/TypeScript (NestJS), GraphQL, React, and React Native. Our workflow is trunk-based CI/CD, and our security/compliance posture is at the highest standards of healthcare, including HIPAA, HITRUST, SOC 2, and CCPA. Hinge Health Hybrid Model We believe that remote work and in-person work have their own advantages and disadvantages, and we want to be able to leverage the best of both worlds. Employees in hybrid roles are required to be in the office 3 days per week, for the full 8 hours of a typical business day. The San Francisco office has a dog-friendly workplace program.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of non-internship full time professional software engineering experience, with at least 2 years working on AI platforms, machine learning systems, or data infrastructure
  • 2+ years of experience in Python (for AI-related work) and Typescript-NestJS (for cloud microservice work)
  • 2+ years of experience with cloud platforms and containerization tools
  • 2+years of experience working in distributed systems, microservices architectures, and large-scale data processing
  • 2+ years of experience in mentoring and leading junior team members, collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams, and contributing to project planning and decision-making

Nice To Haves

  • Experience building and maintaining end-to-end AI/ML platforms or services in a cloud environment
  • Knowledge of infrastructure-as-code tools like Terraform or CloudFormation
  • Familiarity with data engineering practices and tools (e.g., Spark, Kafka, ETL pipelines)
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to collaborate across teams and explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
  • Contributions to open-source AI or software engineering projects

Responsibilities

  • Build and iterate on next-generation therapeutic AI agents that deliver personalized pain reprocessing and mindfulness interventions with clinically sound, empathetic user experiences.
  • Architect and scale a unified brain health education platform that personalizes content delivery, tracks progress, and adapts to therapeutic goals.
  • Define and guide the technical strategy for brain health initiatives in partnership with product, clinical, and engineering leadership.
  • Design scalable AI architectures for multi-session conversational therapy agents that maintain context, demonstrate emotional intelligence, and adjust interventions based on member progress.
  • Establish and evolve MLOps practices tailored to mental health AI, including model evaluation, therapeutic effectiveness monitoring, and safety guardrails.
  • Collaborate with clinical experts to ensure AI interventions align with evidence-based therapeutic protocols and drive measurable clinical outcomes.
  • Build strong cross-functional partnerships across content, clinical psychology, data science, and platform teams to deliver a cohesive brain health ecosystem.
  • Optimize system performance and maintain fault-tolerant, scalable infrastructure capable of supporting high-growth AI workloads, while continuously evaluating emerging technologies to improve the platform.
