About The Position

This is a unique opportunity to be one of the first engineers that Parafin hires in Portland as part of a newly forming team! As a Staff Software Engineer, Backend at Parafin Portland, you will be working directly with our Portland engineering leader to build and establish this new team. You will play a pivotal role in building, scaling, and maintaining our financial infrastructure. This position offers the opportunity to work across various engineering teams to design and develop robust, secure, and high-performing systems that power our embedded financial products. You will tackle critical technical challenges, mentor fellow engineers, and influence the strategic direction of our technology stack. You will be reporting to an engineering leader who is located full-time in Portland. As the team grows, we will establish a physical presence with an in-person collaboration space, with the team working there three days per week (hybrid). This is the first expansion of Parafin outside of our San Francisco headquarters, and YOU get to be part of it!

Requirements

  • 6+ years of software engineering experience, preferably in fintech or financial services.
  • Strong proficiency in backend development, ideally with Python, Go, or similar languages.
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP) and scalable system design.
  • Deep understanding of distributed systems, databases, and API development.
  • Passion for building impactful financial products that empower small businesses.
  • Excitement to build a new team from the ground up.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science (or related field of study), or equivalent hands-on work experience.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain scalable, reliable, and componentized systems that support our merchant-facing products and services, with interfaces that amplify product development.
  • Own and drive technical projects from ideation to deployment.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Product, Data Science, Legal, and Accounting.
  • Improve system performance, security, and reliability through continuous optimization.
  • Mentor and guide other engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence.
  • Collaborate with our local engineering leader to recruit additional talented engineers locally in Portland.
