About the role: Location: Remote-first (United States; BC & ON, Canada) Full-time Permanent Exempt The cash compensation for this role is tailored to align with the cost of labor in different geographic markets. We've structured the base pay ranges for this role into zones for our geographic markets, and the specific base pay within the range will be determined by the candidate’s geographic location, job-related experience, knowledge, qualifications, and skills. United States (all figures cited below are in USD and pertain to workers in the United States) Zone A: 187,000 - 238,000 Zone B: 175,000 - 223,000 Zone C: 164,000 - 209,000 The cash compensation for this role is tailored to align with the cost of labor in different geographic markets. The specific base pay within this range will be determined by the candidate’s geographic location, job-related experience, knowledge, qualifications, and skills. Canada (figures cited below are in CAD and pertain to workers in ON & BC, Canada) 212,000 - 270,000 This role is also eligible to participate in Webflow's company-wide bonus program. Target amounts are a percentage of base salary and vary by career level. Payouts are based on company performance against established financial and operational goals. Requirements

  • BA/BS degree or equivalent experience
  • Bring 7+ years of software engineering experience, including deep expertise in backend engineering and distributed systems at scale.
  • Have a strong technical foundation in software design and development, with experience across multiple programming languages such as Python, Java, or Go, and a strong grasp of modern frameworks, system design, and architectural patterns.
  • Have designed, built, and operated reliable distributed systems and data-intensive services in production, with a strong understanding of scalability, fault tolerance, observability, and performance optimization.
  • Are highly proficient in backend API design, service-oriented architecture, asynchronous processing, and data modeling.
  • Have experience building secure systems and implementing robust approaches to data integrity, privacy, and access control.
  • Are comfortable working hands-on in the code and use your technical depth to lead through implementation, not just direction-setting.
  • Have demonstrated technical leadership across ambiguous, cross-functional initiatives, influencing architecture, execution, and engineering strategy beyond your immediate team.
  • Partner effectively with product, design, data, and ML stakeholders to translate evolving business needs into scalable technical solutions.
  • Excel at code review, technical mentorship, and raising the quality bar for system design, engineering practices, and operational excellence.
  • Bring strong judgment, communicate clearly, and make pragmatic tradeoffs in fast-moving environments.
  • Have experience supporting and growing other engineers through mentorship, and ideally have helped shape hiring and team-building efforts.
  • Hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or bring equivalent practical experien

Responsibilities

  • Architect, design, and evolve backend systems, platform services, and APIs using Python and related technologies.
  • Partner closely with data scientists and machine learning engineers to productionize AI/ML capabilities and integrate models into reliable backend infrastructure.
  • Design and scale distributed systems that process large volumes of data with strong performance, availability, and operational excellence.
  • Build secure, resilient data storage and retrieval systems, with a focus on data integrity, privacy, and governance.
  • Work across the full product lifecycle, from early concept exploration and technical design through implementation, launch, and ongoing production ownership.
  • Lead complex, cross-team technical initiatives that influence roadmap execution and raise the engineering bar across the organization.
  • Produce maintainable, well-tested, observable code and improve the systems, tooling, and standards that support long-term engineering quality.
  • Mentor engineers across the team, sharing expertise in backend architecture, distributed systems, and engineering best practices.
  • Stay current with industry trends and emerging technologies, and proactively identify opportunities to improve our backend platform, infrastructure, and development workflows.
