About The Position

As a Staff Scientist working at the Valvoline Automotive Propulsion Laboratory in Ashland, KY, you will support and execute internal combustion engine and powertrain testing programs to evaluate automotive lubricant performance. Testing includes standard ASTM procedures, development work for new products, and validation testing to support OEM customer programs. You will collaborate with senior engineers and technical staff to ensure accurate test setup, execution, and data analysis. This role provides the opportunity to grow technical depth and operational knowledge within a high-performing R D environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Automotive, or related Engineering field.
  • 3+ years of experience in mechanical or automotive testing environments.
  • Working knowledge of internal combustion engines, powertrain systems, and testing practices.
  • Hands-on experience with instrumentation, data acquisition, and control systems.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel; experience with other data analysis tools preferred.
  • Good communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a technical team environment.
  • Authorized to work in the United States.
  • Some travel may be needed.
  • Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in automotive lubrication or oil performance testing.
  • Knowledge of programmable logic controllers or test automation software.
  • Experience with basic statistics or engineering data analysis tools.
  • Demonstrated curiosity and desire to learn within a laboratory environment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with engine test design, setup, and monitoring under the guidance of senior staff.
  • Participate in test stand preparation, and instrumentation setup.
  • Participate in standard end-of-test inspections and document findings.
  • Support operation and troubleshooting of engine dynamometers, bench rigs, and chassis dynos.
  • Maintain and calibrate test instrumentation.
  • Conduct basic test programming and modifications.
  • Track and manage test components and consumables.
  • Collect, analyze, and summarize test data, fluid analysis data and trends.
  • Prepare technical summaries and test reports based on collected data.
  • Communicate test status and results to project engineers and managers.
  • Maintain a safe, organized, and compliant work environment.
