About The Position

The Garr-Barry lab at WashU Medicine is seeking a highly motivated Staff Scientist to join their team at the Center for Reproductive Health Sciences. The lab's mission focuses on conducting objective research into the effects of nutrient availability and metabolic inflexibility on pregnancy outcomes and postpartum cardiometabolic recovery. They also perform culturally competent investigations of racial differences in cardiovascular and metabolic adaptation to pregnancy, and utilize precision nutrition approaches to improve racial disparities in pregnancy outcomes and cardiometabolic recovery among patients with adverse pregnancy outcomes. This position is primarily focused on scientific writing (70%), requiring strong writing ability and an interest in integrating knowledge of maternal metabolism and placental physiology for translational research on fetal growth and development. The successful applicant will act as a leader within the lab, driving the systematic dissemination of research findings through manuscripts, abstracts, presentations, and some grant writing. The role also involves designing research protocols and assisting in the development and execution of research projects, including experiment design, data analysis, and documentation of results.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree or combination of education and/or experience may substitute for minimum education.
  • 3 years of Laboratory Operations experience.
  • Strong writing ability.
  • Interest in integrating knowledge of maternal metabolism and placental physiology to perform translational research on fetal growth and development.

Responsibilities

  • Designs research protocols, including developing procedures for the collection, verification and management of data, following instructions and discussions with the principal investigator.
  • Assists with grant preparation and reporting.
  • Performs complex statistical analysis of data collected and writes interpretative reports.
  • Verifies the correctness of the data submitted and makes recommendations based on these analyses.
  • Documents research topics and prepares and submits papers based on research work to publications and committees for publication or presentation to peers.
  • Solves practical problems relating to difficulties with equipment or test subjects.
  • Suggests technical or procedural improvements in testing methods.
  • Conducts literature searches related to research project.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
