About The Position

We are currently searching for a Staff Scientist /Veterinarian Scientist for a high ‑ demand mouse phenotyping core that collaborates across NIH to characterize diverse murine models using state ‑ of ‑ the ‑ art equipment and comprehensive testing methodologies. This role will split their time between hands ‑ on in vivo phenotyping (approximately 50%) and scientific collaboration — designing experiments, analyzing and interpreting data, developing and validating methods, and guiding strategic testing plans for investigators. The individual will help shape the continued growth of the Core while providing scientific consultation and educational outreach to NIH labs and trainees. This is a full-time opportunity located in Bethesda, MD.

Requirements

  • Minimum education required is Master's degree
  • A minimum of FIVE (5) years of mouse research experience with relevant hands-on skill and proficiency conducting in vivo mouse testing will be considered.
  • Must have prior experience conducting technically complex experimental protocols.
  • Proficient hands‑on technical abilities and mouse handling skills required.

Nice To Haves

  • PhD in a relevant specialization with experience working with mouse models.
  • DVM or VMD with animal‑model research experience, or candidates transitioning into the research field.
  • Broad comparative medicine/physiology background with the ability to become proficient across neuromuscular, behavioral, cardiovascular, pulmonary, exercise, and metabolic testing domains.
  • Ability to lift 40lbs; move quickly and quietly in small, confined spaces; get up and down from ground easily; stand for extended periods.
  • Experience leading scientific collaboration and communication with investigators (experimental design, data interpretation, follow‑up testing suggestions), plus method development/validation and educational outreach.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; a positive, customer‑service mindset for collaborative work across NIH labs.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a broad range of in vivo mouse phenotyping techniques (neuromuscular, behavioral, cardiovascular, pulmonary, metabolic, exercise physiology, muscle/nerve stimulation, and microsurgery).
  • Understand applications of the core’s diverse phenotyping method repertoire and possess the ability to strategically apply testing strategies to target model specific questions.
  • Prepare summaries of experiments, contribute to the evaluation and discussion of results.
  • Study, adapt, and/or develop new techniques needed to answer new research questions.
  • Maintain detailed records of laboratory experiments, perform statistical analysis of data, prepare tables, charts, graphs, summaries, and other materials for inclusion in publications.
  • Provide training and guidance to students, fellow and other staff members in the DIR in the use of equipment/laboratory methods, procedures, and techniques.
  • Contribute as an author and co-author in the writing and preparation of scientific papers for publication in recognized journals.
  • Attend training sessions for new methodologies and techniques as needed and participate in conferences to stay abreast of latest scientific developments.
  • Develop new methods and techniques independently where training does not exist by reviewing literature and applying own scientific knowledge, aptitude and insights to find new approaches to answering questions.
