A Brief Overview Provides support in obtaining and maintaining vascular access in pediatric patients. This includes placing peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC) and difficult peripheral intravenous catheters (PIV), teaching staff and families about various vascular access options, changing/troubleshooting central line dressings, and maintaining a PICC database.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree from an accredited college or university in nursing Required
  • Minimum of 1 year of RN experience Required
  • Must be able to perform a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature, without loss of efficiency or composure, and be able to perform under stressful conditions when confronted with multiple requests, demonstrating prioritizing skills.
  • Ability to effectively demonstrate situational power, control, autonomy, and flexibility.
  • Ability to effectively demonstrate skills in verbal/written communication, time management, problem solving, and knowledge of regulatory agency standards.
  • RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure Upon Hire Required and BLS - Basic Life Support Upon Hire Required and PALS - Pediatric Advanced Life Support within 180 Days Required and VABC - Vascular Access Board Certified within 3 years Required

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in nursing Preferred
  • 1-3 years ICU Experience Preferred
  • Current of valid certification in Critical Care, Emergency, or Pediatric Nursing Preferred

Responsibilities

  • Insert PICC lines.
  • Receives and responds to notification of PICC consult and determine appropriateness of PICC placement.
  • Educates patient/family on PICC placement and ongoing care after placement.
  • Collaborates with medical team to determine necessity of sedation and/or other pain management strategies.
  • Facilitates communication between healthcare team members/departments in advocating for quality/coordinated patient care, and ensuring that patient/family needs are met.
  • Places PICC line per policy maintaining sterile technique.
  • Follow-ups on PICC X-ray post placement and make adjustment if necessary.
  • Uses ultrasound to aid in placement when appropriate.
  • Accurately completes all documentation for PICC consult and insertion.
  • Insert PIVs.
  • Responds promptly after receiving a nursing consult for PIV placement.
  • Attempts PIV placement on patient’s with extensive medical histories or after failed PIV attempts.
  • Uses assistive devices when/as needed to place PIV.
  • Accurately completes all documentation for PIV insertion.
  • Care for and troubleshoot PIVs and Central lines Performs assessments of PIVs and central line troubleshooting Assists with central line dressing changes/cap changes Administers Alteplase (TPA) as ordered.
  • Provides central line education to patients/families.
  • Conducts weekly rounds with each unit CNS/Educator on all patients with central venous catheters.
  • Serves as a consultant to enhance the skills of the bedside RN Maintains database and current knowledge on vascular access.
  • Keeps accurate data on all PICC line attempts and regularly reviews database to identify areas of improvement.
  • Attends appropriate performance improvement and strategic goal meetings.
  • Participates in data collection for NDNQI Reviews national standards/regulations (TJC, CDC, INS, AVA) and vascular access literature regularly and makes recommendations to organizational policies and procedures.
  • Supports research/publication activities related to nursing practice or unit/organization objectives.
  • Utilizes a systematic approach to analyze complex clinical data and information to provide comprehensive consultation and appropriate resources (i.e., literature review, benchmarks, policies/procedures, clinical practice guidelines (CPG's) or nursing diagnoses (ND's), etc.) for clinical problem solving.
  • Critically evaluates existing clinical practice utilizing current or new research, and leads the integration of change into related unit/hospital policies/procedures and/or CPG's/ND's and actual practice.
  • Participates in identifying research topics and related projects.
  • Disseminates, both internally and externally, new knowledge gained through research, evidence based practices and Performance Improvement activities.
  • Performs a variety of functions in order to demonstrates and promotes clinical leadership concerning vascular access Serves as a clinical/systems expert with vascular access, nursing and interdisciplinary team member(s) in the assessment, development, implementation, and/or evaluation of the age-specific individualized patient/family-centered plan of care and documented actions.
  • Proactively collaborates with healthcare team, in analyzing data from patient assessments, team/family communication and current clinical situations.
  • Provides direction in prioritizing plans for patient care while considering the potential for complications.
  • Consistently implements the nursing process in accordance with the unit scope of service, policies/procedures, and standards to oversee the care of patients while utilizing critical thinking skills.
  • Demonstrates clinical competence in an organized manner with speed, flexibility, and appropriate prioritization while maintaining quality patient care.
  • Uses discretionary judgment in assessing conflicting priorities and needs.
  • Functions as an effective liaison between patients, families, staff, and other departments to foster a respectful clinical environment that promotes quality care.
  • Seeks and accepts guidance from all disciplines and incorporates this feedback into job/behavioral skills for continued leadership growth.
