About The Position

This position is part of the Laboratory Support Unit in the School of Science, Engineering and Mathematics. The position is located at a main CSN campus (West Charleston, North Las Vegas, or Henderson); however, multi-campus travel may be required. Position requires experience/knowledge and skill in basic physical, chemical, or biological laboratory practices. Position priority tasks are the preparation and breakdown of equipment and supplies for science laboratory classroom instruction. Responsibilities can include working with various equipment, analytical instruments, chemicals and/or biological materials, and the proper handling, storage, and disposal of equipment, various hazardous and non-hazardous chemicals, and biological materials in accordance with appropriate regulations/procedures. In addition, the position requires replenishing, tracking, and maintaining inventory of supplies as well as maintaining clean, safe, and organized laboratory areas. This is an in-person, on-site, position with no remote work component. Common tasks include, but are not limited to: Working in a laboratory environment to prepare laboratory materials and equipment necessary for instructional laboratories or classes taught in the School of Science, Engineering, & Mathematics. Potentially handling live and preserved microbe, plant, and animal specimens. Preparing media, chemical solutions, and laboratory equipment. Using equipment that may include microscopes, electron microscopes, ion chromatography, LIBS, general chemistry laboratory equipment, PCR thermocyclers, electrophoresis and environmental chambers, spectrophotometers, autoclaves, velocimeters, simple electrical circuits, a basic multimeter. Replenishing and maintaining an inventory of supplies and keeping inventory records. Maintaining clean, safe, organized laboratory areas. Properly handling, storing, and disposing of hazardous and non-hazardous materials including biological, chemical and/or electronics waste. Occasional travel between CSN main campuses. Coordinating with the supervisor, other Staff Research Associates, Academic Faculty, and the Office of Environmental Health and Safety.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a science specialization and one year of professional experience in a research laboratory; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience; OR one year of experience as a Staff Research Associate I in Nevada State service.
