About The Position

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application. The Staff Psychologist serves on the Mental Health Intensive Case Management (MHICM) care team within the Intensive Community Mental Health Recovery Services (ICMHRS) program of the Mental Health Care Line (MHCL) at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medial Center (MEDVAMC) in Houston, Texas.

Responsibilities

  • Provides independent services to Veterans in their homes and other community-based locations.
  • Functions as both case manager and therapist, providing services to Veterans experiencing serious mental illness and their families.
  • Provides high-intensity care, crisis prevention and management, and flexibility in a community-oriented setting.
  • Provides a comprehensive range of psycho-diagnostic services, including assessments and the application of the most appropriate psychotherapeutic techniques to ensure quality care.
  • Engages in direct patient contact, which includes case management, psychological assessments, treatment planning, individual psychotherapy/assessment sessions, family/caregiver stress therapy sessions, and other evidence-based treatments for serious mental illness.
  • Conducts evaluations for patients with a variety of psychological disorders.
  • Supervises trainees in the provision of direct clinical care.
  • Consults with medical center staff on a wide range of patient care issues.
  • Utilizes psychotherapeutic techniques, assesses and treats patients, striving to help them collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to reduce, eliminate, or better manage mental illness.
