The pharmacist provides comprehensive pharmaceutical care through integrated drug distribution, patient counseling and teaching. This role involves interpreting medication orders, reviewing drug therapies for contraindications, interactions, allergies, and appropriateness of orders for patients. The pharmacist demonstrates the ability to assess and interpret age-specific data, contacts physicians to clarify medication orders, and documents interventions appropriately. Additionally, the pharmacist provides clinical consultation, drug information, and clarification to practitioners, nursing staff, patients, and families. They sustain the hospital formulary, minimize non-formulary procurements, and maintain knowledge of Louisiana and Federal pharmacy laws and DEA regulations. The pharmacist supervises pharmacy support personnel, verifies the Pharmacy Technician's dispensing of medications, and oversees the operation of the Pharmacy in the absence of the Pharmacy Supervisor. They work independently with minimal supervision, organize and prioritize work assignments, and ensure timely provision of Pharmacy services. The role also includes accurately dispensing medications, preparing sterile admixtures, and maintaining records for controlled substances as required by law and pharmacy policies.
