About The Position

The University of Iowa Health Care is seeking a Staff Nurse (RN) to join our Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU)—a state-of-the-art observation unit serving adults and adolescents experiencing psychiatric crisis. The CSU is a 17-patient observation unit designed to provide immediate, therapeutic intervention for individuals in psychiatric crisis. The unit features an open-concept milieu with a large central space equipped with comfortable reclining chairs rather than traditional hospital beds. Individual therapy rooms are located adjacent to the central living area to promote timely, patient-centered care. The environment includes homelike amenities such as TVs, music, and web access, creating a calming and supportive setting that promotes stabilization and recovery. The Staff Nurse (RN) for the Crisis Stabilization Unit assesses patients' nursing care needs, evaluates effectiveness of care provided, and integrates nursing theory and research into clinical practice. Percent of Time: 50 - 100% Schedule example: 50%-100% positions available. 20-40 hours per week dependent upon percentage of position. Rotating D/E/N shifts and rotating days off. 8 and/or 12- hour shifts available. Weekend and holiday rotating assignments required. Orientation will be at 100% schedule/40 hours per week. Orientation duration may vary. Location: Regular salaried position located in Iowa City, Iowa

Requirements

  • An Associate’s Degree in Nursing or a Diploma in Nursing is required. OR; Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing, Professional Masters of Nursing and Healthcare Practice (MNHP), MSN/Clinical Nurse Leader or a Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN, MA) is required.
  • License to practice nursing in the state of Iowa required by date of hire.
  • Minimum of six months adult inpatient nursing experience or recent internship on an adult inpatient unit
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Proven capacity to function with a high degree of autonomy while actively collaborating within a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Successful history in building/facilitating interpersonal relationships involving patients, families, colleagues, and student-learners.
  • General proficiency with computers

Nice To Haves

  • Previous nursing experience working with behavioral health patient population.
  • Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing or Masters Degree in Nursing is highly desired.
  • If Baccalaureate degree in Nursing is not yet obtained, active enrollment in a BSN program is desirable.
  • 2+ years of previous RN experience in a Pediatric Psychiatric Hospital Unit OR Emergency Psychiatric Medicine experience.
  • Adaptability to the unknown.
  • Interest in creative problem solving for unique clinical care challenges.
  • Ability to complete tasks autonomously and problem solve independently.
  • Experience utilizing electronic medical records.
  • Knowledge of University policies and procedures
