About The Position

The Endoscopy Registered Nurse assists in the nursing care of patients having upper and/or lower Endoscopy, Bronchoscopy, and Special Procedures in both the Center for Digestive Health and Inpatient ESP1.   The nurse functions independently in the pre procedure, procedure and post-procedure Endoscopy and Special Procedure areas and the Inpatient Endoscopy and Bronchoscopy (ESP1) areas.

Requirements

  • Registered Nurse currently licensed by the Ohio State Board of Nursing.
  • The Charge Nurse must have worked in Endoscopy Unit for at least 3 years and must have experience assisting with all the departmental quality projects with an understanding of how to complete them independently.
  • The Charge Nurse is responsible for knowledge of departmental, equipment, and Provation troubleshooting.
  • Maintains current B.L.S./A.C.L.S. certification. Casual Part Time RNs not assigned to on call are exempt from the A.C. L.S. requirement.
  • Joins and maintains membership in O.N.A. and the Alliance Local Unit of O.N.A. within 31 days of employment.
  • Must be computer literate to complete task(s) as required. Such as Meditech (Hospital Support Software), Halogen (performance appraisal system), Relias (education system), ability to retrieve e-mails, complete online enrollment for health insurance/benefits and any other programs, as assigned.
  • Able to stand/walk for up to 7.75 hours per shift.
  • Able to bend to reach items on floor, bedside level, and stretch to reach overhead.
  • Tall enough to be able to reach over a bed far enough to give care and turn patients.
  • Able to lift 50 lbs. intermittently, unassisted.
  • Able to move and ambulate patients, using good body mechanics, unassisted.
  • Ability to see clearly and hear normal speaking voices.
  • Able to communicate verbally interpersonally, and over the telephone in a clear speech.
  • Able to wear personal protective equipment for an extended timeperiod, as necessary (i.e., mask, gown, goggles, PAPR, if indicated, etc.).

Responsibilities

  • Registers patients for outpatient procedures correctly and in a timely manner if needed in the absence of the Registration Desk Clerk.
  • Performs and documents all pre-procedure and post procedure phone calls appropriately on required form. Performs required screenings.
  • Provides pre-procedure education for all patients.
  • Completes log for all postoperative calls that need follow up intervention.
  • Ensures care of the patient through proper identification of the patient, correct procedure, site and allergies.
  • Monitors patient pre-intra, and post procedure per policy and documents findings in medical record.
  • Documents patient care in a complete, clear, and concise manner.
  • Prepares patient for procedure by performing patient assessment, IV start, and administration of any ordered medications.
  • Ensures that required forms and tests results are on the patient's chart for the time of procedure.
  • Appropriately discharges patients ensuring accurate discharge instructions/prescriptions and patient education.
  • Cross trains to Same Day Surgery when assigned.
  • Serves as preceptor to orient all new Endoscopy colleagues when assigned per Endoscopy orientation policy and checklists.
  • Serves on committees as assigned by Perioperative Coordinator/ or Director of Surgical Services.
  • Communicates with Perioperative Coordinator/Educator, Director and Physicians to facilitate daily procedure schedule.
  • Participates in Nursing Council meetings and completes all assigned projects.
  • Responsible for checking emails and online learning assignments (Relias) on a regular basis.
  • Assists in writing policy and procedures and competencies for department using evidence-based research.
  • Takes call on a rotational basis as assigned by the Perioperative Coordinator/Educator or Director.
  • Performs and documents all required departmental cleaning utilizing cleaning checklist.
  • Performs and documents all required departmental safety checklists.
  • All other duties as assigned by the Director within legal limit.
  • Sets up procedure room with all necessary supplies and equipment independently.
  • Assists physician with Endoscopy, Bronchoscopy, and Special Procedures through:
  • Use of proper clean and or sterile technique.
  • Assists Anesthesiologist or CNRA as needed.
  • In the absence of Anesthesia Department personnel, administers Moderate Sedation only under the direct supervision of a physician, if indicated.
  • Demonstrates proper use of patient care equipment, computers, and printers.
  • Follows established guidelines for operating and cleaning scopes and equipment.
  • Accurately and appropriately prepares and documents specimens for the lab per policy.
  • Appropriately documents procedure and prints pictures when necessary.
  • Reviews Staffing daily, ensuring adequate staffing while avoiding overstaffing to maximize financial savings for the hospital.
  • Completes daily staffing assignments for the next day's schedule.
  • Checks daily schedules for changes and makes adjustments as needed.
  • Monitors and reduces end of shift activities that result in overtime.
  • Maintains a constant vigilance over patient flow and communicates changes appropriately.
  • Ensures patient comfort and patient/family satisfaction by following customer service standards.
  • Accurately communicates patient care data to other members of the healthcare team.
  • Enters physician orders into Meditech for next day's cases.
  • Adds physicians and scopes into Provation as needed so patient family doctors can receive a report of the procedure.
  • Ensures H&P are in each chart for next day's cases.
  • Builds charts onto clipboards for next day's cases.
  • Accurately provides and delegates patient care and unit activities. Assures completion of duties within a timely manner.
  • Ensures checking/care and documentation of all equipment. Including, but not limited to:
  • Code Cart/Defibrillator/ Suction
  • Glucometer
  • Medication/ Patient Refrigerators
  • Omnicell Machine
  • Blanket Warmer
  • Eyewash station
  • Assists with orientation of new colleagues.
  • Coordinates patient and family teaching.
  • Assists with and provides input for colleague evaluations.
  • Assists with performance improvement projects:
  • a.  Monthly statistics
  • b.  Reprocessing log audits
  • c.  2-Week Call backs to Excision Patient for Infections
  • d.  Completion of monthly safety checklists.
  • Performs yearly unit policy/competency review/revision.
  • Communicate suggestions for educational/competency needs and departmental improvements.
  • Participates in sub-committees and task forces giving suggestions for departmental improvements.
  • Performs daily charge verification.
  • The Charge Nurse is responsible for knowledge of departmental, equipment, and Provation troubleshooting.
  • Any other duties as assigned by the Director within legal limit.
