About The Position

The primary role of the Staff Nurse (Critical Care Transport) is to deliver and oversee critical care during the transport of patients within the hospital system to the most appropriate medical facility. This includes providing both Basic and Advanced Life Support (BLS, ALS) in pre-hospital and hospital settings. Working under the guidance of a licensed Medical Control Physician (MCP) and the supervision of the Chief Flight Nurse and EMS Coordinator, the Staff Nurse is responsible for treating patients of all ages and backgrounds who are experiencing serious illness or injury. The nurse uses age- and condition-appropriate equipment and techniques to assess, stabilize, lift, move, and safely transport patients. In addition to clinical care, the Staff Nurse ensures accurate documentation, supports efficient EMS operations, and represents University Hospital and EMS with professionalism and integrity.

Requirements

  • Must be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Must hold a current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of New Jersey.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of critical care nursing experience in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) or Emergency Department (ED) is required.
  • Must successfully pass a medical evaluation and respirator fit test.
  • Must be able to wear an N95 respirator mask in compliance with PEOSHA standards.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is preferred.
  • Prior experience as a Specialty Care Transport Unit (SCTU) Transport Nurse is preferred.
  • At least two (2) years of EMS driving experience with a clean driving record is preferred.
  • Bilingual skills in English and Spanish are preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver and coordinate critical care during patient transport within the hospital system to the most suitable medical facility.
  • Administer both Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS) in pre-hospital and in-hospital environments.
  • Operate as an integral part of the patient care team, following the direction of a licensed Medical Control Physician (MCP).
  • Work under the supervision of the Chief Flight Nurse and EMS Coordinator to ensure high standards of care.
  • Provide emergency care to patients of all ages and backgrounds experiencing severe illness or trauma.
  • Utilize appropriate tools and techniques tailored to the patient’s age and condition to assess, stabilize, lift, and transport safely.
  • Maintain thorough and accurate documentation for all patient care and transport activities.
  • Support the overall efficiency of EMS operations through additional assigned responsibilities.
  • Serve as a professional representative of University Hospital and EMS, upholding a positive image in all interactions.
