About The Position

The Staff Microscopist at the Institute of Advanced Materials and Manufacturing (IAMM) is responsible for training and supervising users of electron microscopy instruments, providing expertise in advanced microscopy techniques, and ensuring the safe and effective operation of the facility's equipment. This role involves mentoring students and researchers, maintaining equipment, and supporting research activities within the institute.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Materials Science or related field with at least three years of experience in a multi-user electron microscopy facility.
  • In-depth knowledge of conventional and advanced electron microscopy techniques for various sample types.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to support and interact with users of varying experience levels.

Nice To Haves

  • Doctoral degree in Materials Science or related field with at least five years of experience in advanced microscopy techniques.
  • Experience using scanned probes such as atomic force microscopy and nanoindentation.

Responsibilities

  • Train facility users on transmission electron microscopes (TEM) and certify them for unsupervised access.
  • Train facility users on scanning electron microscopes (SEM) and focused ion-beam (FIB) systems.
  • Support and advocate for safety protocols and assist in safety training for users.
  • Mentor students and post-docs in microscopy techniques and data interpretation.
  • Oversee user operations to ensure safe and effective use of instruments.
  • Collaborate with users on data generation, grant applications, and research publications.
  • Perform regular maintenance and calibration of facility instruments.
  • Coordinate instrument maintenance and repair with vendor engineers.
  • Participate in IAMM Microscopy Facility events and workshops.
