Staff Mechanical Design Engineer

TydenBrooksNovi, MI
Onsite

About The Position

America's energy grid is undergoing its most significant transformation in a century — and Brooks Utility Products has been at the center of utility infrastructure for over 150 years. As the country's oldest electric utility manufacturer and the leading manufacturer of transformer-rated meter sockets, test switches, metering enclosures, and utility security equipment, we sit where grid modernization, advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) deployment, and infrastructure investment are driving durable, long-cycle demand. In 2022, we joined Madison Industries, bringing the resources and ambition of a world-class industrial platform to a business with unmatched customer relationships and domain expertise. If you want to own outcomes, shape strategy, and build something that matters — this is where that happens. We are seeking a talented, self-driven Staff Mechanical Design Engineer to become a core technical contributor at Brooks. This is a high-impact, visible role that sits at the intersection of R&D, new product development, and factory floor support — you will own engineering projects end-to-end, from early concept through commercialization and into production support. ⚑ Work model note: This is a full-time, on-site position at our Novi, MI facility. Our team does its best work together — in the lab, on the shop floor, and around the whiteboard. We are looking for someone who is energized by a collaborative, in-person environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) or closely related discipline.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD software (SolidWorks preferred).
  • Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes: compression molding, CNC machining, sheet metal forming, plastic injection molding, and welding.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple engineering projects independently with minimal supervision.
  • Mechanically savvy with strong hands-on problem-solving instincts.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills — able to document decisions and convey technical content to non-engineers.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with third-party testing and certification processes (UL, IEEE, NEMA).
  • Background in electrical utility, metering, or industrial equipment manufacturing.
  • Familiarity with GD&T, DFM/DFA principles, and structured product development processes (stage-gate or similar).
  • Experience supporting production launches and resolving field quality issues.

Responsibilities

  • Lead design and development of engineered products from concept through commercialization, collaborating with marketing, supply chain, sales, and customers.
  • Evaluate, develop, and implement electromechanical solutions quickly under compressed timelines.
  • Design products in conformance with applicable agency standards (UL, IEEE, NEMA, ANSI, etc.).
  • Contribute to brainstorming and technical review sessions to develop solutions that improve performance, cost-efficiency, and reliability of metering solutions.
  • Produce complete engineering documentation: CAD models, detailed drawings, BOMs, and product specifications.
  • Support custom engineering requests from utility customers — translating field requirements into manufacturable solutions.
  • Redesign existing products for improved function, cost reduction, 80/20 portfolio simplification, and evolving customer requirements.
  • Manage multiple engineering projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment with cross-functional teams.
  • Actively engage with production and quality teams during product launches to ensure high-quality output.
  • Provide sustaining engineering support for existing product lines — troubleshoot issues as they arise on the floor.
