We know that successful change and progress accelerates diverse perspectives. As we shape our future, everyone's voice matters. Together, we can reimagine the world of work and, with our bold partners, make the impossible possible. As a Staff Materials Supply Chain Engineer, you will lead the transfer of advanced optical materials from R&D into high-volume manufacturing. This role sits at the intersection of materials engineering, supplier development, and production scaling. You will serve as the primary engineering interface to key global suppliers, ensuring our optical waveguide materials meet both technical specifications and long-term business objectives. This is not a traditional sourcing position. It requires deep technical expertise in optical materials and the ability to qualify, audit, and scale Tier 1 suppliers to meet aggressive performance, yield, and cost targets.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Optical Engineering, Materials Science, Manufacturing Engineering, or related field (advanced degree preferred)
  • 8+ years in materials or component engineering within an optics-focused, technology-driven environment
  • Demonstrated experience transferring materials or components from development into mass production with Tier 1 suppliers
  • Strong understanding of optical materials used in waveguide or precision optics environments (e.g., Glass, SiC, LiNbO₃)
  • Hands-on familiarity with optical metrology tools such as Fizeau interferometry and AFM, and the ability to interpret data in the context of yield and performance
  • Deep knowledge of manufacturing statistics, process capability analysis (Cp/Cpk), and structured process auditing
  • Proven experience driving supplier corrective actions and resolving technical issues during ramp
  • Strong influencing skills with the ability to align engineering, quality, and commercial stakeholders across multiple levels of an organization
  • Experience working with global suppliers (Asia experience preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Own the technical enablement of suppliers supporting optical waveguide materials, from early development through mass production
  • Translate R&D material requirements into scalable manufacturing processes with external vendors
  • Lead supplier selection and qualification activities, including technical due diligence and process validation
  • Conduct deep process assessments of supplier manufacturing flows; identify gaps in capability, yield drivers, and risk areas
  • Drive corrective actions at vendor sites during development and production ramp to ensure materials consistently meet optical performance specifications
  • Partner with R&D, Quality, and Supply Chain to transition materials from prototype builds to high-volume production
  • Influence supplier roadmaps to align with Magic Leap’s technical and cost objectives
  • Support multi-source and cost-reduction strategies without compromising optical performance
