Vuzix CorporationWest Henrietta, NY
just now$80,500 - $95,500

About The Position

The Staff Manufacturing Engineer will play a pivotal, hands-on role in developing, refining, and elevating Vuzix’s manufacturing operations. This includes deep engagement with production processes, active participation in the design and development of custom machinery and tooling, and close collaboration with cross-functional teams to diagnose and resolve challenges related to materials, workflow efficiency, equipment performance, and overall product manufacturing. Apply structured problem-solving and data-driven analysis to troubleshoot complex assembly issues, identify root causes, and implement effective corrective and preventive actions aimed at reducing defects and strengthening process robustness. This position will also support the functions of the WG Engineering Department to meet the requirements of the relevant ISO 9001:2015 standards based on the quality objectives established by Top Management.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related discipline.
  • 4+ years of experience in new product introduction (NPI) and sustaining engineering, including support of products from prototype through full-scale production.
  • Strong understanding of core manufacturing techniques, including mechanical fastening, structural adhesive bonding, hand-assembly methods for low-volume production, use of standard assembly tools, and functional product testing practices.
  • Demonstrated experience performing precision alignments and conducting tolerance analyses to ensure repeatable and high-quality assemblies.
  • Hands-on experience with additive manufacturing/3D printing for creating assembly aids, fixtures, jigs, and other support tooling used on the manufacturing floor.
  • Familiarity with process-improvement methodologies and process-control practices, with the ability to identify and reduce sources of variation.
  • Working knowledge of incoming inspection and validation techniques, including optical inspection methods, CMM measurement, and other dimensional verification tools.
  • Basic understanding of ERP system requirements, including how to manage product specifications, bills of materials (BOMs), and routing information.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks, support daily production needs, and operate effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in complementary disciplines, such as computer/data acquisition systems, optical component handling, or related technical fields.
  • Proficient with SolidWorks and Product Data Management (PDM) systems, with the ability to develop models, drawings, and documentation to support manufacturing activities.
  • Practical experience integrating automation into manufacturing, such as robotic handling, metered dispensing systems, PLC-based equipment, and vision-system applications used to improve throughput and consistency.
  • Knowledge of Six Sigma principles and analytical tools for process characterization, defect reduction, and statistical process control.
  • Experience providing design-for-manufacturability (DFMA) feedback on existing and new product designs to improve assembly efficiency, reduce cost, and enhance overall manufacturability.

Responsibilities

  • Design, refine, and optimize manufacturing and assembly processes, transforming bills of materials into high-quality finished products while ensuring repeatability, robustness, and efficiency.
  • Leverage data analysis, validation methods, and advanced inspection techniques to identify variation, drive measurable process improvements, and enhance product quality.
  • Develop innovative tooling and fixturing solutions that support assembly operations, streamline workflow, and improve overall process capability and throughput.
  • Document and implement Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA) using structured problem-solving methodologies to address root causes and prevent recurrence.
  • Create, validate, and continuously improve assembly work instructions, ensuring they are clear, accurate, visually effective, and aligned with best manufacturing practices.
  • Support daily production floor needs while also contributing to longer-term engineering development initiatives, balancing immediate priorities with strategic improvements.
  • Apply waste-reduction principles and productivity-enhancement methods, such as lean manufacturing tools, to improve flow, minimize non-value-added activities, and strengthen operational performance.
  • Meets required ISO 9001:2015 standards and necessary training based on the relevant Quality Objectives.
