Staff Machine Learning Engineer

Welldoc IncColumbia, MD
2d$175,000 - $225,000

About The Position

We are looking for a Staff Machine Learning Engineer to act as the "Technical North Star" for our ML initiatives. In this role, you will architect, build, and scale robust, end-to-end machine learning pipelines—spanning classical ML to Generative AI—that support real-time clinical decision-making. You will personally own the application architecture and technical standards for the ML team. You will serve as the primary technical bridge to our Bangalore engineering center, ensuring architectural consistency and engineering excellence across our global team.

Requirements

  • Experience: 7+ years of hands-on software engineering experience, with at least 4+ years dedicated to Machine Learning engineering in a production environment.
  • The "Architect" Mindset: Proven track record of taking ML systems from "notebook prototype" to "highly scalable production service." You think about latency, inference costs, and system reliability.
  • Technical Stack: Deep proficiency in Python and the modern ML stack (PyTorch, TensorFlow, Scikit-learn). Extensive experience with Databricks and Spark for data lake architecture.
  • Generative AI: Proven experience deploying Generative AI models, including LLM and RAG applications, in a production environment.
  • MLOps Mastery: Strong, hands-on understanding of MLOps principles: model versioning, drift monitoring, feature stores, and automated retraining.
  • CI/CD: Experience designing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines using tools like Jenkins, Git, or Azure DevOps.
  • Regulated Environment: Experience working in HealthTech, FinTech, or other highly regulated industries (ISO 13485, HITRUST, SOC 2) is a strong plus.
  • Global Collaboration: Willingness and ability to travel internationally (to India) 4-5 times per year to collaborate with the distributed team.

Responsibilities

  • Architect & Build: Design and implement robust, scalable Machine Learning pipelines (for both Classical ML and GenAI) that power our clinical decision-making. You will be hands-on with the code, defining the patterns for how we build, test, and deploy models.
  • Platform Partnership: Collaborate with the Platform Engineering & Data team (India) to define the requirements for our underlying ML infrastructure. You will act as the "Lead Customer" of the platform, ensuring the infrastructure evolves to meet the specific needs of our complex US healthcare datasets and compliance requirements.
  • Set Technical Standards: Act as the primary technical authority for the ML team. You will institute code quality standards, lead deep-dive code reviews, and drive the adoption of best coding practices across both US and Bangalore teams.
  • MLOps & CI/CD Ownership: Define and implement the complete MLOps lifecycle. Architect CI/CD pipelines specifically for AI/ML projects to ensure automated, reliable, and efficient model training and deployment.
  • Global Technical Alignment: Act as the primary technical bridge to the Bangalore ML team. You will foster a unified engineering culture by conducting regular technical syncs and traveling to the India office ( 4-5 times per year) to ensure process and architectural alignment.
  • Production Deployment: Drive production deployment, monitoring, scaling, and maintenance of statistical, deep learning, and generative AI (LLM/RAG) models, ensuring high availability and performance.
  • Governance & Compliance: Create and maintain data governance SOPs to ensure all models and processes conform to strict regulatory standards (e.g., ISO 13485, HIPAA, GDPR, SOC2).

Benefits

  • Welldoc offers a competitive compensation package which, in addition to salary, includes generous PTO, medical insurance, dental insurance, vision care, life and disability insurance, retirement benefits. and the opportunity to participate in health savings accounts and/or dependent care accounts.
