The Staff Interpreter (Certified Deaf Interpreter) at Gallaudet University plays a crucial role in providing communication access services to the Gallaudet community, which includes students, staff, faculty, alumni, and visitors. Reporting to the Senior Interpreting Administrator, the interpreter is responsible for delivering professional and accurate interpreting services across a variety of settings. This position requires thorough preparation for each assignment, which includes reviewing scheduled assignments, seeking additional materials to enhance content knowledge, and collaborating with presenters and event coordinators to determine the appropriate interpreting needs. The interpreter is expected to develop their interpreting competencies in American Sign Language (ASL), written English, Tactile ASL, and ProTactile, engaging in ongoing self-assessment and working with their supervisor to identify areas for skill growth. In addition to interpreting duties, the Staff Interpreter must adhere to the RID/NAD Code of Professional Conduct, maintaining confidentiality and demonstrating respect for all consumers and colleagues. They are also expected to support equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives within the Gallaudet community by participating in relevant training and social justice initiatives. Regular meetings with the direct supervisor are essential for reviewing performance, consumer feedback, and opportunities for enhancing services. The role also involves leadership activities, such as consulting with Gallaudet departments on scheduling interpreting services, coordinating services for high-profile events, and contributing to departmental committees. The Staff Interpreter is expected to engage in mentoring and professional development opportunities, addressing current issues in the interpreting field, and fostering a positive working relationship with colleagues. Additional responsibilities include compliance with Title IX training, prioritizing workplace safety, and performing related duties as needed.
