About The Position

Perry Weather is the industry-leading provider of weather intelligence technology. Our mission is to be the most widely used weather technology trusted by organizations to protect lives and simplify operations. Our platform combines robust cloud services, proprietary hardware (weather stations + outdoor warning systems), and mobile/web applications to deliver mission-critical alerts and insights. Our engineering team drives all R&D across our cloud SaaS platform, outdoor hardware devices, and mobile applications. We’re a small, highly skilled, high-ownership team that moves quickly and builds products that have real-world impact. Role Overview We are hiring a Staff Hardware Engineer to lead the technical direction, architecture, and execution of our hardware and Linux-based device platforms. This individual will own the lifecycle of our IoT hardware, from board-level electrical design and system bring-up through validation, field performance, and long-term reliability. This role blends electrical engineering, embedded software development (C++), and technical leadership. You will oversee system architecture decisions, mentor engineers, partner closely with our software, manufacturing, and support teams, and ensure that the hardware powering our nationwide network of weather stations and warning systems is highly reliable, cost-effective, and built for scale. If you thrive in environments where you have true ownership, enjoy balancing pragmatic engineering with forward-looking design, and want to build products that protect lives, this role is for you.

Requirements

  • 7+ years developing embedded hardware and IoT devices end-to-end.
  • Strong experience with Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Test (DFT), including partnering with contract manufacturers to review layouts, reduce assembly risk, and improve yield and reliability.
  • Hands-on experience using Altium Designer for schematic capture, PCB layout, and design review of complex embedded systems.
  • Demonstrated experience driving reliability engineering practices, including edge-case, stress, and extreme-condition testing for embedded or IoT devices.
  • Strong understanding of failure modes in hardware and embedded Linux systems, and the ability to design tests that proactively surface issues before field deployment.
  • Deep familiarity with embedded systems debugging tools (SWD/JTAG, logic analyzers, oscilloscopes).
  • Experience with ARM-based embedded Linux, including U-Boot, device tree, and board bring-up.
  • Experience with OTA update systems, bootloaders, low-power design, and connectivity modules.
  • Proficiency in C/C++ for embedded Linux development
  • Proven track record of owning technical direction and leading system-level decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Own schematic design, PCB layout guidance, component selection, and overall electrical architecture for new and existing IoT devices.
  • Evaluate and implement improvements for ruggedized, weather-resilient, solar-powered IoT devices.
  • Work closely with contract manufacturers, fabrication partners, and testing labs.
  • Lead failure analysis and root-cause investigations for hardware and system-level issues observed during validation or in the field, driving corrective actions into design, firmware, and manufacturing processes.
  • Establish repeatable test methodologies and standards that validate device behavior under off-nominal and worst-case conditions prior to production deployment.
  • Design and maintain reliable field update and rollback strategies for Linux-based devices
  • Write and maintain embedded applications in C++.
  • Serve as technical lead for hardware and embedded systems, driving architecture decisions, mentoring engineers, and shaping the long-term device roadmap.
  • Own critical systems during on-call rotations and lead resolution efforts when hardware-related issues arise.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with product, software, manufacturing, and support teams to ensure tight integration between devices and the Perry Weather platform.

Benefits

  • Casual work environment. We’re located in the vibrant Dallas Oak Lawn neighborhood. As a note, our team is in office M–F!
  • You’ll be working side-by-side with a tight-knit team of experienced engineers who take ownership and move fast.
  • Comprehensive benefits. We offer competitive health insurance plans, 401(k) with employer matching, and a suite of voluntary benefits.
  • Engaging culture. Monthly All-Hands, fun events like Office Olympics, lunch-and-learns, happy hours, and more.
  • Grow with us. We’re growing rapidly, and yet we have a massive amount of work and opportunity ahead. In this role, you’ll define and own how our IoT hardware, firmware, and electrical design standards are built, validated, and evolved as we scale.
