About The Position

We are seeking a highly experienced Technical Specialist in Transmission Control Module (TCM) hardware and electrical design to serve as the global subject-matter expert for transmission, powertrain, and engine controllers. This individual will shape the future of our electronic control module (ECM/TCM/PCM) hardware strategy, lead advanced development, and ensure robust, high-quality controller designs that meet global requirements.In this role, you will be responsible to develop and/or improve the hardware development process with the center of expertise. You will work with cross-functional teams (Semiconductor, DREs, GM software, PCB layout, Mechanical Engineering, Supplier, Validation) to deliver quality product on time. You'll effectively achieve program milestones by thorough and effective program management. You will coach and lead a team of electrical hardware designers. I am seeking a high performing independent engineer to develop winning execution strategies, oversee solutions, resolve issues, and deliver continuous improvement for propulsion controllers considering quality, cost, and timing.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering Required. Masters degree preferred
  • Professional experience creating digital/analog HW interfaces including schematic creation and/or PCB layout & supportive documentation
  • Minimum 10+ years working experience in automotive hardware electronics design
  • Experience in design & analysis tools like Mentor Graphics (schematic & layout) MathCad, PSpice & Saber
  • In-depth knowledge of microprocessor controllers, mixed-signal design, power drivers, serial networks, EMI/EMC, embedded fundamentals, validation
  • In-depth knowledge of requirements engineering process (FMEA, Preliminary Hazard Analyses)
  • In-depth knowledge of verification and validation processes
  • In-depth knowledge of embedded software development, testing and associated tools
  • Understanding of hardware design and failure mode
  • Understanding of engineering theory and principles of operation of mechanical/electrical mechanisms
  • Thorough knowledge of design development and test engineering, manufacturing and assembly operations, engineering processes and procedures.
  • Highly developed oral and written communications skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally within Electrical and across other SMTs.
  • Demonstrated problem solving ability.
  • High level of interpersonal skills to work effectively with others, motivate employees, and elicit work output
  • Very high level of analytical problem-solving skills where problems are very unusual and extremely difficult.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for overseeing and guiding a team of electrical hardware designers. This involves providing technical direction, assigning tasks, and ensuring the team's productivity and efficiency.
  • Work closely with other teams, such as software engineers, mechanical engineers, and manufacturing teams, to ensure seamless integration of electrical hardware designs into the overall product.
  • Lead embedded designs for advanced module architectures.
  • Lead new IC design/development strategic to advanced in-vehicle architectures
  • Lead/oversee electrical schematic, PCB layout, high‑current design, EMI/EMC robustness, thermal design, and packaging
  • Assess the feasibility of proposed electrical hardware designs, considering factors such as cost, performance, reliability, and manufacturability.
  • Support next generation designs in digital/analog hardware including CAN/CAN-FD, LIN, Ethernet, diagnostics (UDS/OBD), engine and transmission controls, mixed-signal circuits, power stages, solenoid drivers, sensor interfaces, and analog front ends
  • Perform/Review/approve electrical worst-case analysis
  • Approve PCB designs and ensure DFM/DFA/DFR
  • Represent the GM HW team as design expert in the core technologies developed among the team
  • Optimize five-point parametric tests and finalize end of line production tests
  • Lead the process as a build-to-print engineer that also acts as a liaison with the contract house
  • Apply cost effective solutions with improved performance design
  • Lead product development as part of a multi hub engineering organization
  • Refine/optimize global controller requirements
  • Maintain Hardware Design deliverables e.g., Block Diagram, Schematics, PCB layout, etc…
  • Lead Peer Reviews and identify issues (e.g. integration, interfaces, systemic issues)
  • Support model-based development and HIL/SIL/MIL validation
  • Align hardware capabilities with transmission/engine control strategies
  • Support Engineering Change Request (ECR)
  • Support Assembly Plant issue resolution
  • Provide technical leadership for troubleshooting activities to support PRTS Issue Resolution
  • Drive read-across activities from recalls and investigations and support Product Investigations (SFI Process)
  • Lead Cost Reduction
  • Mentor DRE’s and other support personnel
  • Provides guidance and consultation to Design Release Engineers (DREs) in product development team meeting
  • Create and maintain Best Practices
  • Demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally within propulsion teams and across other SMTs.
  • Collaborate and strategize with cross-functional teams
  • Ensure all vehicle Program Imperatives (i.e., piece cost, investment, mass, base engineering content & IPTV) involving these components are met.
  • Work with DRE/Validation group to setup a plan for a component validation plan (includes component software verification) and ensure that the plan is executed in time to meet program imperatives.
  • Lead DV/PV testing, EMI/EMC testing, and durability validation
  • Participate/lead in Formal Design, Peer and Quality Valve reviews as required by the Vehicle Development Process (VDP).
  • Support ISO 26262 hardware safety analysis
  • Develop/Review/Approve all In-process Electrical test plans.
  • Develop sourcing strategies and support supplier qualification
  • Support vehicle integration activity for pre-production and production vehicles
  • Lead/participate in issue resolution for design and development issues, ECU warranty analysis, parts restriction and report updates as required to Engineering and Vehicle Team leadership
