About The Position

Open to candidates who are permanent or to those who have successfully filed for ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING INTERN Exam No. 6118 within the filing period From: February 4, 2026, To: April 21, 2026. Under direct supervision, the selected candidate will perform elementary environmental engineering work in the field and/or office and shall receive training in engineering work of moderate difficulty and responsibility on the Assistant Environmental Engineer level. The work and training may be in one or more of the following engineering areas: consultation, development, design, drafting, specifications, estimating, evaluation, surveys, inspection, operations, maintenance. Serving in the capacity of the Staff Engineering Intern, the selected candidate will provide junior-level engineering assistance with the duties and responsibilities noted below:

Requirements

  • A baccalaureate degree in environmental, fire protection, chemical, mechanical, petroleum, aeronautical, or materials engineering from an accredited college; or
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in environmental, fire protection, chemical, mechanical, petroleum, aeronautical, or materials engineering technology and two years of full-time satisfactory experience in environmental engineering work.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of indoor air quality science and IAQ assessment tools and methodologies.
  • Candidates should be familiar with ASHRAE 62.1 and 62.2 (Ventilation and Indoor Air Quality).
  • Candidates should be familiar with DOB Mechanical Code, Ventilation Chapter.
  • Prior experience in environmental science, environmental health, and/or building safety is a plus.
  • Strong analytical, communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to explain complex technical issues to non-technical audiences.
  • Easily adaptable to a dynamic work environment.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Responsibilities

  • Promote Strategies to Improve Indoor Air Quality.
  • Contribute on the development of guidelines related to building ventilation and environmental controls.
  • Conduct research, literature, and policy review as needed.
  • Provide engineering and scientific-related research and technical expertise on industry principles and practices to promote strategies for improving indoor air quality and mitigating exposure to airborne hazards.
  • Ensure that policies and recommendations made by the Department meet or exceed existing NYC and NYS mechanical code requirements for the applicable setting(s).
  • Identify novel and/or cost-effective strategies to improve indoor air quality in buildings that were constructed prior to current mechanical code requirements.
  • Evaluate window fall prevention device submissions for the Window Fall Prevention Program
  • Review and assess applications for variance requests and new device approvals of window fall prevention devices to be used in residential buildings throughout NYC.
  • Provide clear written review comments and technical guidance to address design or submission deficiencies and manage multiple reviews.
  • Conduct onsite inspections to confirm window fall prevention devices are performing as expected and in accordance with approved plans.
  • Represent EDP and the Division on internal and external task forces, committees, and workgroups.
  • Perform other assigned tasks including but not limited to the preparation of associated reports and correspondence and maintenance of records.
