Trystar’s team members are our most important asset, and we are in search of a Staff Electrical Engineer – Power System Controls | Power Distribution based at team (Burnsville, MN; Faribault, MN; Houston, TX; Pointe-Claire, CA; Charlotte, NC) office. Reporting to the Senior Engineering Manager, the Staff Electrical Engineer will see products from the engineering prototype phase to series production. You will be responsible for the design and development of new technology offerings within the Research, Development, and Engineering - Power Distribution team. This includes power distribution, power test equipment, temporary back-up power products, and energy storage technologies. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or an equivalent.
  • 10+ years of experience in AC electrical system product design.
  • Experience designing to electrical specifications for power distribution offerings including switchgear, switchboards, transfer switches, loadbanks, and generators.
  • Experience with the creation of detailed technical product documentation to support product manufacturing, functional testing, certification testing, and customer requests.
  • Ability to specify safe and effective testing practices for prototype testing.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams, suppliers, and internal stakeholders.
  • Experience selecting and validating PLCs, HMIs, SCADA.
  • Experience with selection and use of protection relays.

Nice To Haves

  • NFPA 70E Certification.
  • Experience with UL891, UL1558, UL508, UL1008, UL9540, IEEE C37.20.1 and other standards
  • Communication protocols such as Modbus RTU & TCP/IP, Ethernet IP, Profinet, DNP3, IEC 61850, and BACNet.
  • Experience with ERP, PLM, and Engineering Vault software.
  • Experience with energy storage systems for critical infrastructure.
  • Experience with design or support of metal-enclosed switchgear or switchboards.
  • Experience with PLC and HMI software such as Emerson PAC, Allen Bradley Studio 5000, Siemens SIMATIC, Emerson Movicon, Allen Bradely Factorytalk, and more.
  • Proficiency with power systems analysis.
  • Experience in commissioning of microgrids, generators, switchboards, and other critical electrical infrastructure.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including mechanical and software engineering.
  • Design, prototype, develop, and commercialize a range of products including loadbanks, temporary generator docking stations, UL-891-compliant switchboards, UL1558-compliant switchgear, automatic transfer switches, and more.
  • Assist in developing control schemes and specify required equipment for multi-layer power distribution systems.
  • Create and review wiring diagrams, layouts, and BOMs.
  • Define new product integration testing plans.
  • Lead Control Systems design efforts during new product development projects such as selecting and qualifying electrical components, ensuring electromagnetic compatibility.
  • Implement and validate real-time control systems using SCADA, EMS, DMS, and other automation tools.
  • Design and commission generator control systems, including excitation control, governor settings, and automatic voltage regulation (AVR).
  • Develop and validate generator paralleling logic, synchronization controls, and load sharing schemes for multiple gensets and grid interconnections.
