Job Summary: Location: Methodist Women's Hospital Address: 707 N. 190th Plaza - Elkhorn, NE Schedule: M-F 7:00a-3:30p Flexible hours. 24-36 hours per week. The Staff Development Nurse is responsible for developing, organizing, implementing, and coordinating new employee orientation and onboarding. The role includes providing staff with evidence based unit specific education across the health system to ensure annual and ongoing skills and competencies are met.

Requirements

  • Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited school of nursing required.
  • Successful completion of annual mandatory education requirements.
  • Minimum 3 years clinical nursing experience required.
  • Current valid Registered Nurse (RN) license, valid compact multistate license, or a temporary permit while awaiting licensure required.
  • Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) strongly preferred at time of hire, required within 3 months of hire.
  • American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required.
  • Ortho Neuro - National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification training required by the completion of orientation.
  • Knowledge of databases preferred.
  • Computer knowledge with abilities in word processing required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate and interact with patients, family members, hospital personnel, and co-workers.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize work assignments.
  • Ability to learn, retain and utilize computer skills that are required for department and hospital or clinic information system.

Nice To Haves

  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) from an accredited school of nursing preferred.
  • Certification(s) in areas of specialty preferred.
  • From National Certification Corporation (NCC) within 1 year of eligibility.
  • Specialty certification required within 2 years of hire into position.
  • Progressive Care Certified Nurse (PCCN) preferred.
  • Gerontological Nursing Certification (GERO.BC) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and lead the clinical orientation and progression of new hires to the unit. Coordinate clinical practice based learning with preceptor. Facilitate General Hospital Orientation. Facilitate, evaluate and validate new hire clinical progression and competency. Develop action plans for success when needs are identified during orientation. Provide feedback and documentation audit for 6 month probationary and annual evaluation of new employee.
  • Identify, plan and implement staff development initiatives to enhance knowledge, validate competency and encourage personal and professional growth. Perform and participate in ongoing educational and competency needs assessments. Participate in developing and disseminating action plans/change initiatives that address individual, unit and organizational learning and competency needs to improve the quality of care. Collaborate with Service Leader to monitor completion of learning/competency requirements. Support and mentor unit staff in personal and professional development opportunities utilizing Benner’s Novice to Expert model.
  • Participate in ongoing initiatives to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of clinical orientation and ongoing competency. Facilitate use of evidence based practice and adult learning principles when developing educational initiatives. Develop and implement unit based and hospital-wide skills and competencies. Engage in and evaluate trials of educational and competency initiatives. Develop and update online learning modules and clinical skill critical elements.
  • Serve as clinical role model for staff through expert knowledge and application of the nursing process and critical thinking skills. Assist, support and mentor staff in individualizing the nursing plan of care based on assessment findings and evidence based practice standards. Review, modify and disseminate changes related to documentation and care planning within the Electronic Health Record.
  • Accountable for the delivery of quality care to patients and families according to the individualized needs of the patient. Maintain skills and competencies in the delivery of direct patient care. Support clinical development of direct care staff by working a minimum of two shifts per month with a patient care load on the unit.
  • In addition to essential functions, the following schedule is required: 2-3 weekend shifts or 2-3 overnight shifts – all 12 hour shifts The same major and minor holiday rotation as a staff nurse on the unit – all 12 hour shifts.
