You focus on building and maintaining secure, scalable data systems while supporting high availability and integrity across environments. You work closely with engineers to optimize schema design, monitor system performance, and resolve production issues with a focus on long-term maintainability. Beyond database expertise, you influence system design, continuous delivery practices, and scalable cloud architecture. You proactively identify and resolve production issues, focusing on long-term maintainability. You join developer calls, provide architectural guidance, and coach best practices with empathy and clarity. You navigate infrastructure trade-offs with ease and contribute to strategic initiatives related to security, compliance, and business continuity. Requirements

5+ years of hands-on experience designing, implementing, and managing relational databases in enterprise or government environments
3+ years of experience in DevOps, Software Engineering, Site Reliability Engineering or related roles
Expert knowledge of database architecture, data modeling, indexing, and query optimization
Experience with database security and compliance controls-Highly skilled in replication, partitioning, and performance tuning
Ability to lead architecture reviews, data governance discussions, and integration with other platforms
Strong skills in data cleaning, refinement, and preparation for analysis and modeling
Experience with datastore backup and recovery solutions, high availability, sharding, and replication
Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to innovate and implement creative solutions
Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code tools (i.e. Terraform, CloudFormation, Pulumi)
Excellent communication skills to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams
Attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality results

Responsibilities

Enjoy a mixture of schema design, reliability engineering, query and performance automation, security, and operations work
Help develop and implement database scaling strategies like sharding, replication, and data partitioning for high-growth applications.
Optimize MySQL and PostgreSQL databases for performance, stability, and security.
Design, build, and maintain database schemas and storage systems that support scalable application growth
Collaborate with engineering teams to support data migrations, application integrations, and optimized queries
Monitor and troubleshoot production applications and databases, ensuring high availability and performance
Collaborate cross-functionally to lead initiatives such as disaster recovery, ETL, data classification, software upgrades, and compliance
Establish and promote database best practices in high availability, observability, and system design
Stay current with industry trends and best practices in database management.
Track database incidents and design root cause fixes and preventative measures
Participate in design reviews and provide database expertise for system enhancements
