About the position

At Fastly, we’re an edge computing platform securing the best of the internet with speed, security, and reliability. Our Analytics team empowers Fastlyans with actionable data to drive key decisions and is focused on building a best-in-class data platform. As a Staff Data Engineer, you will lead the evolution of our data infrastructure, optimizing pipelines on Google Cloud Platform (GCP), scaling ingestion of complex data sources, and establishing best practices for performance and reliability. This is an opportunity to lead impactful projects in a dynamic, collaborative, and innovative environment, supporting data analysts and business analysts across the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Architect and drive the evolution of our data platform, ensuring scalability, performance, and reliability
  • Provide technical leadership and strategic direction for data engineering initiatives
  • Mentor other engineers, fostering technical excellence and professional growth
  • Establish and enforce best practices for data architecture, pipeline development, and deployment processes
  • Collaborate closely with data analysts and business analysts to understand data requirements and deliver impactful solutions
  • Manage infrastructure-as-code deployments using Terraform and containerized applications with Kubernetes
  • Continuously evaluate and implement tools and practices to enhance team productivity and data quality

Requirements

  • 8+ years of experience in data engineering with a proven track record of delivering scalable data solutions
  • Advanced proficiency in Python, SQL, Airflow, and Google Cloud Platform services (BigQuery, Cloud Storage, Pub/Sub, etc.)
  • Experience with infrastructure as code tools like Terraform and container orchestration with Kubernetes
  • Strong understanding of data warehousing concepts and experience optimizing queries and performance in platforms like BigQuery
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively in a distributed team environment
  • Demonstrated experience in technical leadership, influencing engineering best practices, and mentoring team members

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working closely with data analysts and business analysts to translate business requirements into scalable data solutions
  • Familiarity with distributed systems and big data tools (e.g., Clickhouse, Kafka)
