About The Position

ARA is seeking an enthusiastic, detail-oriented individual to operate, maintain, and repair specialized pavement data collection equipment for highway infrastructure assessment. This position is located in our office in Ventura, CA. There is no set weekly schedule due to the nature of the data collection work, but when maintenance or repairs are required and completed in the office, work hours are normally Monday to Friday from 8am to 5pm. Previous pavement testing experience is desired but not required. Training will be provided as needed. Applicants should possess good communication skills, flexibility, and a willingness to learn and be challenged. This position involves travel throughout the U.S. and requires an excellent driving record and driving skills, mechanical ability, and basic computer knowledge. When not traveling, technicians perform office-based activities, such as equipment maintenance and data processing.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 21 years of age and able to pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical.
  • Excellent driving skills and willingness to drive pickup trucks and vans, sometimes with trailers; must be able to drive long distances and work in a vehicle for long periods of time.
  • Willing and interested to travel, occasionally for weeks at a time.
  • Mechanical ability; previous mechanical experience preferred (e.g., performing routine inspections and/or troubleshooting issues with automobiles, aircraft, or related specialized equipment).
  • Ability to work as part of a crew of 2-3 individuals with minimal supervision.
  • Flexible schedule that will include working some weekends and nights, with overtime hours when needed.
  • Basic computer knowledge, such as sending/receiving email, and Microsoft Word or Google documents.
  • Strong attention to detail.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous pavement testing experience is desired but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in pavement testing and other transportation infrastructure data collection projects throughout the U.S. Travel will likely be over 75% of work hours, mostly short-term travel of 2 to 4 days with the occasional long-term assignment of 1 to 4 weeks.
  • Learn operation, calibration, and maintenance of modern data collection equipment.
  • Drive or operate van- or trailer-mounted data collection systems (pavement condition testing, deflection testing, ground penetrating radar, pavement coring, pavement friction testing).
  • Office-based tasks such as processing, comparing, and analyzing data using proprietary tools, Microsoft Excel, etc.
