About The Position

The Staff Chaplain provides pastoral counseling and spiritual support to patients, family members/significant others and staff at Kobacker House. Usually this involves development of a 'parish' within the hospital. The chaplain actively serves as a member of an ecumenical pastoral care staff sharing in activities such as staff meetings, on call responsibilities, and providing hospital wide worship experiences.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Theology/Human Relations from an accredited theological school, university or seminary.
  • Four to ten years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Four units of Clinical Pastoral Education.
  • Ordained, licensed, vowed or endorsed by denomination.
  • Knowledge of pastoral care and counseling skills, especially as practiced within the hospital setting.
  • Eligibility requirements for Certification by National Association of Catholic Chaplains or as a fellow by the College of Chaplains.
  • Two years ministry experience, with at least one year in a hospital setting.

Responsibilities

  • Provides on going, hands on ministry to patients, families and staff, including counseling, prayer, sacramental ministry, response to 'codes' and educating and assisting patients with advance directives.
  • Shares rotation of all 'on-call' responsibilities as needed.
  • Participates as a member of hospital interdisciplinary teams and serves on both Pastoral Care department and general hospital wide committees.
  • Attends Pastoral Care staff meetings and retreats.
  • Supports and performs the variety of responsibilities related to the hospital decedent care program, including grief counseling and assisting nursing and medical staff in completing necessary paperwork.
  • Serves as contact person or liaison between local clergy, patients, families and staff.
  • Participates in policy development, strategic planning, and evaluation of and for the Pastoral Care Department.
  • Assists in responding to requests for workshops, lectures, etc. from the hospital, church and community.
  • Shares responsibilities for providing a variety of worship services as appropriate, including memorial services.
