About The Position

E-Space is bridging Earth and space to enable hyper-scaled deployments of Internet of Things (IoT) solutions and services. We are building a highly-advanced low Earth orbit (LEO) space system that will fundamentally change the design, economics, manufacturing and service delivery associated with traditional satellite and terrestrial IoT systems. The Staff Satellite Battery Electro-Mechanical Engineer will participate in the development, building, and testing of E-Space satellite battery hardware. The ideal candidate has 10+ years of experience in mechanical or electrical engineering with at least 5 years of electro-mechanical design including battery pack design and mechanical work. This position will report to the Electro-Mechanical Engineering Lead and will work closely with the Electrical, Mechanical, Thermal, Test, and Manufacturing teams. The successful candidate will be based in our Saratoga, CA office.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or similar.
  • 10+ years of experience in electro-mechanical engineering.
  • Skilled with CAD tools.
  • Expertise with battery cells and interconnect such as laser welding and ultrasonic bonding.
  • Expertise with module packaging including integrating PCBs and interconnect into enclosures.
  • Experienced with production level DFx and FMEA.
  • Experience with mechanical and thermal stress-testing such as vibration, shock, and thermal cycling.
  • Demonstrated success working in a dynamic environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with UN38.3 testing.
  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or similar.
  • Expertise with rigid and flex PCB technologies, packaging, and interconnect.
  • Experience performing thermal analysis in Thermal Desktop, IcePak, Comsol, or similar tools.
  • Experience producing battery packs in high volumes.
  • Expertise with polymerics including epoxies and conformal coatings.
  • Experience designing for space environments.

Responsibilities

  • Own the satellite battery product from clean sheet to flight.
  • Execute all aspects of battery pack electro-mech design including battery cell interconnect, packaging, thermal and electrical accommodation, leading design reviews, etc.
  • Produce drawings and documents including fabrication packages, interface control documents, assembly procedures, test procedures, certification reports, etc.
  • Design for thermal management and support thermal analysis.
  • Design for mass manufacturing and assembly of packs.
  • Execute UN38.3 certification tests.
  • Perform space product qualification, support production acceptance testing.
