About The Position

The North Carolina Office of the State Auditor (OSA) functions as the state's fiscal watchdog, auditing over $100 billion in state assets and liabilities annually to ensure transparency across local, state, and federal government operations. OSA's reports provide recommendations that lead to good government reforms and diligently investigate alleged cases of fraud, waste, and abuse of taxpayer dollars, collaborating with law enforcement for prosecution when warranted. The Office of the State Auditor (OSA) is actively seeking a Staff Auditor I to join its Rapid Response Division. In this role, the Staff Auditor I will assist with various investigations and performance audits, contributing to enhanced accountability, transparency, and efficiency within North Carolina government programs.

Requirements

  • Basic knowledge of auditing/accounting principles and practices
  • Demonstrated ability to oversee multiple priorities
  • Demonstrated experience communicating effectively both orally and in writing
  • Strong experience in report writing
  • A bachelor’s degree with 12 semester hours in accounting from an appropriately accredited institution OR An equivalent combination of education and experience

Responsibilities

  • Work as part of a team to plan and complete audits of a diverse range of topics and programs
  • Speak with auditees, agency management, and legislators to understand the programs under an audit
  • Conduct on-site fieldwork, including information gathering and interviews, to determine: Risks impacting the program under an audit
  • To identify processes and controls that mitigate program risks
  • Review and analyze source records, programmatic data, financial and program documentation, and/or systems
  • Document the results of your work and any potential findings and recommendations
